How do most people record Smash Bros.?

Well, there's really two viable ways to get recordings out of Brawl. One is to have a video capture card. The cheaper option is to buy a device called a Dazzle (a USB device that hooks from your TV into your computer). If your computer's decently close to your TV, the Dazzle is probably the better option if you don't already have a capture card built in.

As for other suggestions

1. Have a lot of hard-drive space handy
2. There are camera options if you save the footage as a replay, but use camera-work sparingly. I can't name the number of videos that made me nauseous by deciding that the camera angle needed to constantly rotate. It obscures the action and just looks unprofessional.
3. You should usually save on the best option that's NOT direct DVD video. I assume you're putting this up on youtube, and while DVD video is nice, it's ridiculously large as well. Definitely something to avoid.

You could record using a VCR...then turn it into a DVD format...then convert the DVD format into whatever format you please..
