How do leaks happen?

How do video games get leaked? I'll use Brawl's leak as an example. I believe it started with Nyasenya, or however that would be spelled. She knew a bunch of stuff, and even knew about Sonic's update being pushed up from it's original release date. The Dragoon Prophet, as he became known as, knew just about everything, and posted what turned out to be almost the entire roster. How did they get inside info? Know someone working for Nintendo? Know... Sakurai? ...Other?

Disgruntled underlings are paid bad wages and are offered a lot by leaking information. Others are just people so excited with the game that they have to show people. Finally, a very likely one, they are intentional leaks. On the internet, the more illegal and forbidden something is; the more hype it gets. Harry Potter is an excellent example where the book was basically stolen and put online for spoilers (Half-Blood Prince). The book still sold extremely well despite spoilers, so I am sure it's a practice among studios to just release "leaks" to whet people's appetite.

No, not hackers. CK has it right. Leaks are one of two things:

1) Disgruntled / underpaid employees.
2) Deliberate "underground" marketing campaigns.

Yeah what he said but I also think you should add people who can't keep a secret or people who too excited to hold it to themselves.

CK has it right. More common than not, interesting new 'information' about something super secret is let out by companies just to make people want it more.

And the disgruntled employee thing would actually be kind of uncommon in a video game creation setting. Normally people who work on games get payed pretty well.

How about people who do minor stuff like packaging and other stuff, im not sure they get paid much.

They also have next to no idea what is going on in a game.

Programmers in bigger houses and games tend to be paid really poorly for all the work. EA is notorious for forcing 80 work weeks just to meet deadlines and offering little compensation.

Saw something on G4 the other day that they're starting to actually pay well.

But yeah. It seems that EA has a large amount of leaks, so you do have a point.
