I have 1 friend who is about my same skill level and I beat him a good 6 out of 10 times. then I go on for glory and beat about 80% of the people (come across that total badass who shreds me) today I lost to a ness who pk fire spam to back throw spam til it killed me, another loss to a wario who just kept getting on his ****ING BIKE and running me over and farted on me -.- other that I won every other game. had a couple people who gave me really good matches...to put it simply, how do I progress as a better player when I cant fight people better/slightly than me. seems like I stay at the same level of skill no matter how many people I play against.

Your best bet would be to get involved in your local scene(most groups have a facebook group) that we're y'all meet the players who will just wreck you but you'll get better much faster.

If you can't find other players you are basically screwed. Sure you can improve, but it's going to be painstaking and you still wont get anywhere near the level of dem pros :D

If there is no scene where you live or you suffer from severe social anxiety then get friend codes from people who are better than you and play those people.

Well you're playing Sonic. It's mostly a guessing game either way, skill's not that much of a factor:awesome:

In all seriousness though, the only way you're going to get better is if you get curb stomped at weeklies/local events. Online matches don't have all the legal stages, there is no input lag (so characters that require good input timing are much more powerful), and there are too many weaker players that will arguably teach bad habits. Have you really looked around? Did you check your regions board out here? Some of us drive quite far to get to our locals. Sometimes that's just what you gotta do if you've got the love for the game.

One thing I always preach when people compare themselves to others: Keep in mind that they most likely are improving as you are, so it may be difficult to see improvement in that sense.

Tips on improvement:
  • Tournaments. This is the BEST thing to do, get experience from other competitive players. If offline isn't an option, there are online tournaments on various sites that you should definitely look in to. Play friendlies with others, preferably people that are better. I, and most others, learn best from getting my *** kicked.
  • Watch others(videos on youtube). You could really pick up a thing or two from watching a top player of your character whether it be a tech, combo, or even a simple response to a single situation.
  • Watch yourself. No, really; if you get brutally destroyed, swallow your pride and record the match. Analyze yourself and your opponent. What was he/she doing that was stopping me? What was I doing wrong that I could improve on?
  • As far as playing CPUs you should mostly practice your technical skill on them, this is your ability to maneuver your character. Try not to play them too often though, they can create potential bad habits that a human opponent will pick apart.
  • Get a training buddy, it seems you may have one already. It's always good to be positive towards one another, maybe even practice doubles against others every now and then.

Stop playing For Glory if you want to get better. Instead use a website called www.smashladder.com which matches you up with people looking for more competitive games and will give you feedback. I also suggest saving all replays and going back telling yourself what you did wrong AND right in the match.

probably the best response I got thank you so much for taking time to type this out for me all really great advice :) I have thoroughly checked all areas and there is no local scene to be found. I have a training buddy but hes not much better than me anymore. I would love to meet someone who curb stomped me without doing something op/cheap but for glory is not the spot. I dont even know where to start to find online tournaments so if anyone could throw me an idea id be glad to check it out.

offline tournaments re not and option for me because they dont happen in my area trust me i've checked for about 3 hours for nothing but disappointment. I would love to see someone trash me, in all honesty. I guess I will take your advice and look faarr out there for a way to get to one, thanks for the advice and input

Why don't you host your own tournament? Doesn't have to be big.

umm, I'm sorry to break it to you kid, but there's something called Google. I suggest you search at least 10 to 15 miles around your current area, if that doesn't work, try 20 to 30.

wasn't trying to be a jerk. I just find it annoying that people complain about not finding tournies/events in their area when you can search a huge range of your current living area.

This. Search facebook for Smash groups in your area or see if your school/colleges have one. If there isn't any, make one. These groups make it easier to organize meetups or online play with.

Do not give up on FG. Yes decent/higher skilled players are hard to come by, but eventually you'll meet a sparring partner. FG gives you the opportunity to play a variety of people with different characters and playstyles. See what you can observe from their play and learn from it. Its not the best tool to get better, but its something if you're unable to find players locally.

This doesn't belong in competitive discussion.
Nobody else seemed to mind, thanks for your not at all feedback of the topic of the thread. Also, if you could tell me where these threads belong I would really appreciate it. I thought it belonged her because it deemed some trace to competitive because I want to progress to be competitive

I was explaining my reasoning behind my post and providing a little backstory, sorry if this kind of post offends some people I'll cut down on the amount of text I post, but in the future, be aware there are other and nicer ways to say things.

what was so offensive about the way i said it? i didn't include any happy smiley? ok here it is.

you know im right tho

you were basically saying in the original post "i lose to people who are better than me, this is unacceptable". this is all just a matter of getting good. no need to make any pretexts

How is a wario playing Forza on Smashville skill, and in anyway represent being better than someone?

It means that if you can't beat a bike spamming warrio (protip- predict when hes about to jump from the bike and attack him in air, or when he keeps riding, just smash the bike), then that probably means he's more skilled than you.

Hey, im really not trying to make you feel bad, i was at the same situation like you. But complaining on forums aint gonna help you, just keep playing. But you should not just train your playign skills, but also your mental skills like predicting, and mainly, NOT using predictable stuff.
