I don’t live in SoCal, but there are websites like this that offer Melee tournaments listings. You just have to change your filters if you don’t like them: Link
If you don’t feel like venturing out to tournaments than you can play Melee online using net play against other players. Websites like Smash Ladder offer tutorials on how to play online against others if there isn’t much of a scene in your local area.
