How do I choose the best combinations for teams?

I'm thinking of entering a team tournament (3 Vs 3) at my school on Friday. And I was wondering if character choice matters. Should I just play whatever character I want? Or should my partners and I play specific roles. If so which kind of combinations work best?

Never done 3 v 3, but I'd highly suggest balancing out the playstyles of your team. Like having a projectile user, an up-close combatant and a character who can be a balance between the two perhaps? Some characters just mesh well together so experiment.

I have no actual experience sorry.

Down on the corner, out in the street.
Wait, you're school has Smash 4 tourneys? Lucky ******* :p lol jk

But I've heard that Pikachu and Villager go together pretty well in a 2v2, so maybe find a character that can suit the both of them.

You could just ask around at the character forums and see what they say if you want.

Hm, I don't have any actual experience, but I could tell you that plenty of characters have different assets that can help you achieve certain things. But I'm probably wrong. Are custom moves allowed in this tournament? Because that makes everything ten times as crazy. I still don't think that you should assign roles to your team or anything like that, because fights can't be planned out, while combos between teammates can. Dunno. What I'd do is see what characters everyone's good at and try out combinations there.

I like playing with Little Mac and my girlfriend plays with Kirby. We're both pretty unskilled but we do alright in 2v2 because she just stomps down on people while I battle on the ground. I'm sure it's annoying and wouldn't work with more pro-type players, but it does alright online.

Pikachu, Ness, and Game and Watch would be fun. They can play off of each other really well.
Maybe three Villagers? Trees for days.

Conventionally, however... A damage dealer that can cover a lot of ground (Meta Knight, Captain Falcon, maybe Little Mac?), a heavyweight killer (Bowser, D3, etc.), and a camper/projectile specialist (DHD, Samus) or cleanup guy around the edges (Jigglypuff, Yoshi).

UPDATE: We won the tournament. What we did was assign different roles per player (close-combat, mid-range, and long range). Big thanks to everyone who gave ideas on here.
