How did u decide on a main?

As the post title, how did you pick a main? I see alot of people with mains listed in their signitures and people asking things like "Who will main Meta Knight?" I'm curious how people are coming to this desicion before the game comes out.

I pick characters from my favourite franchises.

Kirby was my favourite series before Sakurai stepped down, so I'll pick Kirby or King Dedede. I will NOT pick Meta Knight because he is a complete noob magnet and will be overplayed (initially or forever). Fire Emblem is my current favourite series (been a fan for over a decade) so I will also choose characters from there. Lastly, I've been a fan of MOTHER since I played EarthBound on its debut.

At this point, I will just pick the less popular character from those three series, which will probably be Ike.

I pick them for personal taste not how good they are. I main peach cause i like the character not cause she's really good in melee... I hear she's better which is great but i'd still main her even if she was severly nerfed!

In the past, I've always picked characters based on how much I actually like them as characters, and if I like the way they "feel".

I love Yoshi, but don't play as him because I don't like his playstyle.
I like the way Captain Falcon plays, but I don't like him as a character. So I don't play him.

For Melee, that mostly meant playing as Falco, Ness, Pikachu, and Fox.

For Brawl, I haven't pinned down any mains because no matter how much I like a character, I won't play as them if I don't find them fun. Sonic is one of my all-time favorite video game characters, and judging by the demo vids and general comments from those who went to E for All (specifically Gimpy), I have very little doubt that I'll be disappointed with him. But I still can't call him my main yet.

i will pick diddy kong as my main.. if you play any game with diddy kong in it (besides Diddy kong racing imo)
its easy to understand his potential.

In melee the way I picked my few mains Zelda, Jigglypuff, and Ness was that I found their playstyles not only unique but for me at least playable. In Brawl though I will admit every character so far looks awesome, so right now I'm maining every character .

well there are a number of reasons I would pick *insert character here* to be my main.
1.because I just like that character in general and I am determined to be the best with them.(primary main)
2. their combat style works well with me, this would be my secondary main.
3. because they are very entertaining to use(not in the same sense as a character who is high tier) but just fun for me to use. this would be my ?thirdary? main.
4.because the character is generaly good. this is the character I use only when I need a relaxing easy battle to get back into the calm-but-focused mind set.(secondary main to my ?thirdary? main)

I play as every character and "main" whichever character I like best. Choosing a main before Brawl comes out seems just like a guess, as we slightly know hoe the characters will play, and can guess from there. If you likes light characters in Melee, chances are you'd main a light character in Brawl, right?

I don't really have a main. I like to be able to play decently with all characters, rather than excelling with one. Since I don't go to tournaments, it works for me.

My closest thing to a main in Melee is Captain Falcon. Assuming they don't completely change him for Brawl, he and Ike will probably become my preferred characters.

Kirby's been my main in 64 and melee.

In brawl, Kirby is only gonna get better.

Yeah, mains you can't really choose until you try them, but I wish to main Kirby (who knows, I might find someone more awesome w/ all these new characters) and perhaps Ike as secondary.

I main anybody who has a gameplay stlye I like and if I like the character in general. For SSb it was C.Falcon, Link and Fox and for Melee it was C.Falcon, Link and Roy

In Melee, I generally stuck with Marth, with Peach being my main now, and Falco being an alternate. Guess what? They're high-tier as well. So really, it all depends on who is truly the most comfortable for me to play as. From my impressions, I'll probably be using Peach and Pit in Brawl, possibly Marth if he returns.

I pick who I have most fun playing as. in SSB I mained Ness (and Kirby), and then in Melee I mained Roy (and Falco), and from the characters that are already confirmed, I'm leaning towards Pit, Ike and Dedede

for Melee I mained half the roster though lol. I had one half my brother had the other half, we both used zelda and ice climbers, and c. falcon was the only char that wasn't used in tournaments

I think it's stupid to decide what you will main before you've actually played! (unless you went to E 4 all). You have to decide which character is the most fun to play with. In melee mained Samus and Kirby because they were fun to play.

I'm going to main Pit (I wanted to since 2006 E3), Olimar (assuming he's in, he's my favorite possible newcommer), and Diddy maybe (he looks unique). I'd like to see what other characters do before I determine my last main (the first 2 are set in stone).

In SSB 64 I mained Ness because he was the closest thing to playing as MIKE (StarTropics) Also because of his variety of elemental PK spells, his "confusion" throw, and his PK Thunder recovery.


In SSBM I mained a lot of characters, and changed them time and time again. My last main character was Peach, and so far she's stuck as my #1. (Other mains I had were: Ness, Fox and Luigi)

In BRAWL I'm maining Sonic and/or Peach and/or Mario. Because Mario and Peach are my best characters in Melee, and I'm determined to make Sonic my main. That's how it is.

I chose a primary main from the game I like most. Kirby, but he didnt feel the same as he did in 64
so I went Marth because of his speed which I like.
My secondary just has to be funny to use, like Falco, jump and BOOST into the air
My tertiary is Donkey Kong, pretty cool character.

In Brawl I will main Kirby, Meta Knight or King Dedede.
I want to main at least ONE Kirby franchise character again.

I'm going to give King Dedede and Pokemon Trainer the most playtime in the beginning. But I won't know my main until the game comes out.
