Smash Hero
I'm curious to know what the general answer or what is the norm when it comes to building a fighting game scene with games that offer DLC characters and how DLC character effects the scene of the game. Excluding smash, I'm actually not sure how many modern fighters have paid DLC characters, I would assume MKX might as well as SF, maybe KI? If it doesn't apply to these major games then maybe someone can respond imaging that they did.
Skull girls for example has a DLC character as I'm sure many other smaller 2D fighters do. Rivals of Aether has at least 2 other characters that aren't playable in the early access version, I'm not sure if they are planning on releasing them as DLC.
DLC is a great idea to expand the roster of games where the current budget doesn't allow to make the game deeper and have more options. However the concerns that come to mind are if there are DLC characters and the developer wants the game to have a healthy competitive scene, having DLC basically demands that players spend more money on their game for the DLC as to not be at a competitive disadvantage. How well does this sit with players?
On the other side of things, TO's when running tourney's would need to provide setups with these DLC characters as well. I guess you could rely on your players to bring setups with the DLC characters but what is it like to try and host tourneys for games that are only on steam and you need multiple computers? And what if the most of the people who bring setups don't have the DLC? How does that work?
