As expected, there's going to be a second Fighter's Pass. This might contain more controversial choices. I am not a fan of non-Nintendo characters but they are popularly requested and have a decent overlap with Smash fans. More Fire Emblem characters are probably on the way. Usually with DLC characters, you ironically get the safer and less creative choices. Usually main characters only. No villains, no obscure characters. Just main characters. Boring!
Here's my solution- there should be two Nintendo fighting games. One is a low-budget one Sakurai can work on in a laid-back manner. He can put whatever he wants in this one. The other should be a reboot of Smash that only has Nintendo characters. The backlash would be greatly lessened if this were the case. Reboot Smash could either be made by Hideki Konno or Takayuki Shimamura. We could also reduce the production values in Reboot Smash quite a lot, as it makes the matches slower and the controls less responsive. Sakurai Smash can be serious and Nintendo Smash could be cheap and silly like the old days. Sakurai Smash can have these amazing, colorful, well-animated stories and Nintendo Smash can be about smashing a bunch of action figures together. Sakurai Smash can have an orchestra and Nintendo Smash can have upbeat songs and direct re-creations of old songs. Sakurai Smash can be competitive and Nintendo Smash can be casual.
Just please let Sakurai off the hook and give him his own series. It would also make Nintendo look good because they would care about employees more than money.
