How do you control his up B? Sometimes it gives me great distance, sometimes it doesn't.

It basically depends which way you were facing before you do the move.

^^^^This and i dont know how to explain it but you should just practice it, you'll get better and better at it

If you're going for horizontal distance be sure to hold directly towards the stage after hitting upb and not diagonally up and towards the stage. It moves him farther forward with this method, whereas holding diagonally up forward moves him less distance forward, but keeps him at his peak longer. Hope that helps.
