Hi im KuJu and I was wondering how tourneys work

Ive been playing smash since my hands were big enough for a controller. I recently was reminded that there is a competitive scene around this and I wanted to know how it works. is it lan? Is there an onl;ine mode, are there bans, ect, ect.
