Well, basically I'd like to say congratulations to him for making one excellent decision about Brawl.

Not to add a Ranking System to Brawl.

Why is this good you ask? Well:

People will play matches for fun, not to surpass someone else in the ranking system.

You can try out new techniques, or go a new character that you like and want to test out, without the fear of your rank being lowered.

You won't have people disconnecting in the middle of a match to keep there stats.

People won't be so determined to find glitches/hacks to increase there rank :)

This in my opinion, will save a lot of trouble that could potentially have been in online play :)

-.-, there's only like 4 good smashers where I live, I'm actually pretty bummed with their choice not to add a ranking system

We don't know that there's no ranking.

EDIT: My bad, I must have missed that bit of nugget. Reopened.

I don't know...

1) having a rank can be fun

2)they could have made it so that there's an online mode where there aren't any ranks (I think this is the case in Halo)

3)they could also have made it so that if someone disconnects in the middle of a match their rank goes down anyway. this does have the problem of people's ranks being lowered because of an accidental disconnect though.

4)you're right about this one, which seems like the biggest problem.

yea it seems nice to see thats theres not ranking system so you dont have to worrie about people dropping out of a match. but it would be nice to have a ranking system maybe they should add both.

They should have the option to play unranked matches, for those who are too scared and ranked matches for those who want to compete. It's so unbelievably simple I can't believe Nintendo hasn't thought of this.

You have to understand that Nintendo is just recently getting into the online scene, so their decisions on the format won't be the same as say, Microsoft's. It's just them getting their feet wet, seeing how everything works out before committing heavily to online.

Yeah sadly. Online play is what makes Xbox360 so awesome. I wish Nintendo had gotten into the online scene before now. They just don't take the online system seriously really. It pisses me off a little bit.

They're neglecting a huge part of gamers and with their current system they'll never have proper maximal sales. But whatever, it's not that big of a deal, its just that basic *** XboxLive of last gen is better than anything Nintendo can produce so far.

On a more on-topic note: I hope they don't implement online ranking, it's not that important. Though I do think voice chat would be nice.

There WOULD BE NO ONLINE CHEATING!!!!!!!!!!!

the only way it would be this way is if each individually wii hosted their own game, which would NOT be the case in a ranked system.

MY GOD!!!

back on topic.

There is no reason not to have a ranked system other than the fact that nintendo has much more problems to dedicate their time to then creating one. THATS why they are not including it.

As another poster already pointed out, they could just create "Ranked games" and "un ranked games"

jeez, you guys should stop playing smash for a little and enter the real world. You are totally lacking in common sense, its just unbelievable.

What the hell? You people are so afraid of the slim chance that people will find some remote way of cheating the ranking system that you'd rather have it removed? Seems like alot of you are just going along with everyone else in this thread, instead of actually thinking about what good a ranking system could do.

I don't see the problem with letting people screw around in unranked matches, but still having a ladder where you can easily gain recognition for being skilled. It wouldn't hurt anything at all, and you'd have some visual aid as to who the current top gamers are. This way you can be all like... woo, rank 1 is playing rank 3 today, i want to watch that match! ect.

Also something i've been wondering: how does "wanting to win" = "not fun"?

Uh, if there were a ranking system implemented, I don't think it would be too far fetched to include with it:

- An option to choose between a "just for fun" online mode and one whereupon you can improve or worsen your ranking.
- Award a win to anyone whose opponent(s) disconnect(s).
- Have moderators patrol regularly for any strange happenings that could potentially signify cheating. It is, after all, a service aimed to please customers.

To say that online ranking systems will cause people to look for glitches is dumb. Glitches will be found eventually anyway. Also, those who cite that a ranking system would take away from the fun of the game have no basis for this other than being particularly bad at a game. Anything is less fun when you can't win. If you are playing for fun, why would your ranking bother you anyway.

Your ranking could also be used to look for others in your skill level, who you will have more fun playing with. I think not having a ratings system is a big mistake. Aside from all I've said, having one would give incentive for a lot of players to strive to be better, when without it perhaps they will just be content to be the best within his/her circle of friends.

Actually, there can be. Remember hacking? MKDS, MPH? Its impossible to hack a Wii now, but there might be in the future.

Also, remember the IC gltich, HUGE stalls [wall bombing, rising pounds, Luigi ladders], and soul stunner. If anyone stalls in a place that's IMPOSSIBLE to follow, I'd LOVE to disconnect from them.

Like people don't cheat for fun? If any gamebreaking bugs are found online people are going to abuse it regardless of a ranking system.

It's common sense as to how they should go about dealing with DCers and other cheaters. Also, I don't want to play people that will completely own me and I don't want to play against play that I can completely own.

which was the case for me every time I played Mario Kart DS since that doesn't have a ranking system.

Amazing, you've been gone for sometime, only to come back to be a total douche. And you say that we need to go outside.

Your little "real world" remark is completly insignificant.

Another thing, the reason why there isn't any ranking system in brawl is because Nintendo is persistant to use their"Friend Code" system in order to avoid any communication mishaps, and to avoid exclusivness from other players(Like in the Halo community).

Everyone should be able to play who they want when they want, and besides, they can always make a ranking system similar to Metroid Prime Hunters. It would allow you to veiw other player statistics, and have the functionaity to allow you to play people of the same rank, and thanks to the Friend code system,we have the ability to play who we want via smashboards.Yes,another reason why is because that the system would take some time to establish.

A rank system in brawl is simply insignificant, and isn't needed. The only thing it would do is cause more problems.

I also find it strange that you come in a topic just to talk smack.Maybe you are the one who needs some air,and quit wasting your time on being an idiot.

Nintendo just doesn't want to do it.And how can you REMOVE something that doesn't exist?

I don't see what's wrong with a stat based ranking system like they have with MPH.It isn't like public tournaments aren't going to happen anymore(There will be alot).

I don't see the problem with letting people screw around in unranked matches, but still having a ladder where you can easily gain recognition for being skilled. Winning isn't everything.I rather play the game against a good opponent and lose, than beat a scrub and win.I love the challange. ^^

i didnt come into this topic to talk smack. Its just people have been fantasizing over this game for so long, they are forgetting to use common sense. Honestly, the atmosphere here has become so dependent on melee its sickening. Yes it was a good game, but its 6-7 years old now, its time to move on. Brawl is not going to be a melee clone, Sakurai has too much pride and is too good of a game developer to do that.

the real world comment was not to insult people, it was just said in the hopes that people will start to realize what actually happens during game development. Its a business, and just like any other business, their goal is to make maximum profits, and including a ranking system is just unnecessary.

The thing is, i believe that the Halo Community is just full of a-holes. The smash cummunity is ALL about finding better players. Its about mastering an art form over killing as many guys as you can. Not to mention the fact that the way Halo's online play was constructed was just ********.

They should do it JUST like Counter-Strike. Have a lobby area with rooms. Private/Public, Each host defines the rules :

1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 etc.
Ranked / Unranked - > where once you choose rank, you get a list of settings you can choose (like items or no items, specific stages or not).
In that sense, you would have specific rankings...like you would have a 1v1 ranking system, a 2v2 ranking system, a 1v1 no items, a 2v2 items. etc.

Taking away freedom from the player is the worst thing you can do in any video game. And thats what nintendo is doing. Its a stupid idea, but hey .. its the easiest isnt it?

I think having a Rank wouldn't change a thing with people as far you all think. No matter what you do there will always be people who will cheat for rank or mod the game somehow &someway. You can't stop that. You can only prevent it from happening like WoW. blizzard take the initiative to hunt down people who cheat & ban them. That doesn't stop people from making new accounts & cheating all over again. Xbox 360 supports the achievments for every single time you complete a task of some sort, there are people who take it seriously and some who don't. I think it would be a nice add-on to atleast have. I play the Xbox 360 everyday and my Gamerscore is a mere & simple 2,311 because i don't care. It would be nice to atleast have the option or level you are on Super Smash Bros. I think we can all agree that no matter what cheaters never gain anything but simple number which aren't everything. they just have no lives & no skill in the game which makes them have to cheat. It's unavoidable but that shouldn't stop us from still playing the game seriously or just having fun.

It's just a shame that Nintendo may not add the option of ranking if it's online capable.

I agree, Halo is good because you can customize so much, each game type has at least 3 variations from what I've seen, which makes the experience that much better. Playing the same old 1 mode gets boring.
