So I added a Mr.M replacing Green Mario, added the CSS and the in-game battle portrait.
The problem is that when I start the game and start a battle with it the game freezes, though this didn't happen when I used the costume without the CSS and the battle portrait.

I don't really know what's happening.

Sounds like your common5 size is too large. Make the portraits lower quality to lower file size and try again.

I'll try it out

EDIT:The portrait is the one that appears in the select screen or the box that appears while battling?

When you make your portraits, make sure they match the dimensions of the vanilla PM portraits.
Also, using the CMPR format for CSS portraits can really help lower the file size. It does drop the quality a little upon import, but it's not really noticeable in-game.
