I keep watching videos of Marth players and they do, what I assume is FAir, this move where they jump towards another player, swing, jump again while still in the air and swing again knocking the person back.

I spent a bunch of matches against my friend, who plays Link trying, to do this but I never pulled it off.

I tried holding towards him while jumping and hitting A and I just swing and land on the ground regardless if I hit or not. I tried to jump after connecting but nothing happened.

I also just tried hitting the C stick towards him, and while that will knock him back a bit, I can't chain this either.

Please help me figure out how to nail this down.

Also, if you use any shorthand, please add next to it what you mean as I only know what very few of them mean.

Thanks in advance!

I do not know how to short hop. I was trying that last night as well and all my jumps would be high.

When doing that FAir move, do I tilt or push the stick all the way to the left or right?

To shorthop, just lightly press the jump button, but hard enough so that the command registers. If you're using a GCN controller, I recommend you use the X or Y buttons to do this as they're ideally located near the A button (and to an extent, the C-Stick).

To fast fall, just ram the control stick down after a completed jump.

As for the FAir, it does not matter as you cannot smash in the air, so just press it so it registers on the controller. However, if you're using the directional-pad (D-pad), you will lunge more toward the opponent. Therefore, if you do not want that, just lightly tap it/just the C-Stick.

To do shorthop, its not how lightly you press the button. It is how long you press the button for, so to shorthop perfectly all you need to do is tap the button and release asap and you've got it down. Its quite easy once you practice it for a bit.

Well I got the short hop down, but the FAir combo that Marth has is still escaping me.

After the first FAir, am I suppose to jump before the second FAir, or is it Short Hop -> Hold Forward and hit A twice?

This is really my first time playing this game and it is really throwing me as I have never played a fighting game with so many ways of attacking.

You can short hop fair twice in once short hop. But you gota watch your opponents di and follow up. Also it depends on where you're hitting with your blade, and what your percent your opponent is at. If he is high percent and you're hitting with your tipper, you won't hit him because it hits him too far.

At lower percents with the tipper will sometimes hit if your opponent doesn't know how to escape. Since combos don't really exist in brawl. You can also hit with the middle of your blade for less knockback and damage if you want to hit twice. Hope that helps.

Directional Influence, its just moving your character in a certain direction so it can move. An example is if you hit your opponent, and if they DI away (hold analog stick away from you after getting hit) then they will fly away from you avoiding a possible follow up attack by you. If they DI towards you (holding analog stick to you after getting hit) they won't fly as far and will be closer to you, which is bad for them because you can proceed to combo them. Just an example.
