Help me upload a YouTube vid

I am trying to upload this vid I recorded. It is currently in a .VMV format and I want to convert it into a format that youtube will accept. Can someone help me on doing this?

Use Windows Media Maker to reformat it into an acceptable file format that Youtube wants.

If you're using a mac, just use imovie HD and take the same steps.

GAH! I tried and it wouldnt let me. It says its not the appropiate file or something. Please can someone tell me an alternative program!
