Hey y'all

Doomolish, a mexican TO, approached me about getting Mariguas to Apex 2014. He can't afford the trip himself, so he's reaching out to us for help of the financial variety.

Why should we get the dude here? Well, he's one of Mexico's best (recently taking some cool games off of Jaime--and I don't need to explain what a big deal that is) and he has some truly badass combo videos out there on YT. You've all seen them, I dearly hope. If we're going to throw money behind anyone, he seems like a pretty solid option--communicating with us, willing to come and try his best, the whole 9 yards. Entertaining player, very good player, and from what I've been able to tell a stand-up guy.

Why give money? Essentially, you're buying yourself a better tourney experience or viewing experience and doing a service for the community. It's also customary for him to play a reasonable number of friendlies as a "thank you" for contributions, but I can't speak for him in that regard.

Why him and not Alvin or Jousuke? Well, we don't know if they need the money or want to/are able to come. Mariguas has his visa together, he's ready to play with the big boys. Mexico has done some epic things in the 64 community and Mariguas could be the guy to do more.

I don't actually know who's holding whatever money you guys decide to donate yet, or exactly how much he needs; the most cursory of searches reveals that round trips from mexico city to the east coast run about $500; I don't know if this is a "whatever help he can get" sort of thing or how much he's capable of putting forward himself.

Apex 2014 is the placeholder for "big US tourney" as far as I'm concerned; I have no problem with changing that if they don't give pools or whatever and we decide to do it big elsewhere.

Not entirely sure where the money's going. Am I supposed to be holding it? I'm glad to do it and y'all know that the community's worth more to me than a couple hundred bucks, so I guess until someone tells me otherwise the paypal is bullock3@uni.illinois.edu. Post in the thread to confirm if you contribute. Obviously if he wins money it goes back to the biggest contributors/biggest contributors who want it, up to the amount donated, and obviously there'll be full refunds if he ends up not taking the money for whatever reason.

I'll start us off with $10. I'm broke.

Amount so far:

Battlecow, $10

Total: $10

Afraid of the ZELGADIS effect. I might donate later.
I really, really do not need to hold the money; whoever you guys do trust can do it. Dude PM'd me and I made a thread. LMK and I'll change the OP.

Also you're an asshole and I'm actually a little offended.

What is ZELGADIS?
This is an awesome thing to organize Bcow :smash:

However to be completely truthful, I am not gonna throw money at people outside of Peru or Japan.

Zelgadis is a melee dude who tried to steal a bunch of money that was supposed to go to the Genesis 2 pot. Very bad person.

Battlecow, you still got that yen lying around? It's worth $12 less right now if you haven't exchanged it. Japan started devaluing their currency even more, so you should dump it and donate the ~$48

It makes infinitely more sense to set up a kickstarter, gofundme, etc for this. If that happens I'll consider donating. With gofundme there's the added bonus that you are automatically refunded if whatever you're funding doesn't end up happening. So you could also make one for the long shots like Jousuke, Alvin, etc. with no risk.

Luigi sucks
Would it be a better idea to donate money to the pot as an incentive for more players to come or just try to fund players on a one-by-one basis?

yea i mean, for a pot to entice you, you have to be at the skill level to win that pot.

I'll be up for donating for sure. I vote for a kickstarter thing as well.

The melee peeps have never done it with kickstarter, but sure whatever someone go make that and I'll throw my $10 at it instead

how much of the cash do they take?

Also I'm way way way too lazy to find out how to turn yen into dollars and I'm not donating $50 anyways lol

Oh I thought you were being real lol

Dat European humor yo

Contributing to the pot won't help because it's not like he needs our money as an incentive to go; he actually does not have the cash necessary to purchase this ticket. That's how it generally works, at least, I don't have personal insight into Mariguas's pocket book.

yup. I guess the idea is to get it out there, give people a chance to think on it. No harm done, we can always let it die and then resurrect it closer to the day of.

We should try to have one apex sponsorship thread, where all the players who require funding are listed, along with the links to their respective donation drive sites. Keep things nice and organized.

I'll donate some money to someone when the winter draws closer. I'd love to see Japan here again.

This is just built on the melee thread-by-thread model for funding.

At least some of Japan doesn't need the money

What if we start making the major prize of big tourneys be free trips to international tourneys? Winner take all, winner gets the trip.

I don't like that idea

why not just give money? Money can be used to buy the ticket by the people who get it, or if they can't go to that tourney they can still use it. It's also a lot of trouble to distribute the excess or raise the difference

Yeah, Let's make it dudes!

Thank you so much for helping the SSB. community, Bcow. Javi's trip to the US really made the whole country wanted to play again. They're training and motivated bc of his performance and I really wanna see something like that on SSB. This would be great for the community as a whole too, as the other countries will see Mariguas, and they will try to send their representatives too (nobody seem to care that JaimeHR is mexican and Isai has mexican blood too, lol). It would be great if you manage the money, Bcow. I've not done that before on internet, so it would save much time :p

Why to trust him your money?
Mariguas is from DF, and has been arounde the scene for a long time. Jaime is from Cali, that means he travelled a lot just to play him. Does that mean it is impossible for him to steal the money? No. But I think he proved his passion for this game, travelling all around Mexico just for play Smash. Attending to tourneys in Mexico, and even convincing Jos3 to come. I don't think he's just trying to steal the money after all that.

Anything you want me to say to Mariguas?

Btw, we'll have a tournament the next month, on 8th & 9th called "Celayork Fest 6" (no stream, sorry). Jos3 from Peru is coming and we're training very hard for this. We'll upload the vids ASAP.

Here's the fb event, wich is hosted by our fb group. You can join if you wish :D (I'm "Alejandro CN", the main admin and creator of the group).

Click on my sign for vids ;) CF6 it's gonne be uploaded on it.

What happened with the Zelgadis? I haven't heard about that before. I thought something like that never happened before. Sorry to read it :/

Greetings from Mexico to everyone! :D

Thankyou very much to everyone. This, regadless of the benefits I get, I love to see the community together. It makes me feel that I'm part of something, that we all have the love for Smash in common.

It's clear that I would do everything I could to reach the best place, and not just that, but I would try it to be as stylish as I could and with some combos that would scare Lucifer himself.

My economic situation it's tough right now. I could donate myself with 100 bucks. :b:

Aw man now I really wanna see this guy here

I might kick in some extra money when winter starts coming up. Does anyone know the optimal timeframe for buying tickets? we should get 'er done before then, if we do it.

hmm...that might draw fewer people, considering how many colleges start back up the day after mlk. the good news is, assuming it's at ru again, the campus won't be dead, so there will be many WOMEN WEARING SKIRTS IN 4 DEGREE WEATHER TO STARE AT

oh they do and it is a wonderful sight to see

however, at nighttime, the yoga pants are shed and the dresses come out

and it is beautiful.

the good thing, though, is that chris and smellsworth can probably get some local kids to come to this because a lot of the people will already be moved back in to off campus housing - i think dorms are good on saturday, though, so they might not be around, but yeah. i'll pull some alumnus strings and see if i can advert as well.

The entire *Pound* series disagrees. Some of those had more entrants than Apex (for Melee) and it was always on MLK weekend.
