Hey y'all
Doomolish, a mexican TO, approached me about getting Mariguas to Apex 2014. He can't afford the trip himself, so he's reaching out to us for help of the financial variety.
Why should we get the dude here? Well, he's one of Mexico's best (recently taking some cool games off of Jaime--and I don't need to explain what a big deal that is) and he has some truly badass combo videos out there on YT. You've all seen them, I dearly hope. If we're going to throw money behind anyone, he seems like a pretty solid option--communicating with us, willing to come and try his best, the whole 9 yards. Entertaining player, very good player, and from what I've been able to tell a stand-up guy.
Why give money? Essentially, you're buying yourself a better tourney experience or viewing experience and doing a service for the community. It's also customary for him to play a reasonable number of friendlies as a "thank you" for contributions, but I can't speak for him in that regard.
Why him and not Alvin or Jousuke? Well, we don't know if they need the money or want to/are able to come. Mariguas has his visa together, he's ready to play with the big boys. Mexico has done some epic things in the 64 community and Mariguas could be the guy to do more.
I don't actually know who's holding whatever money you guys decide to donate yet, or exactly how much he needs; the most cursory of searches reveals that round trips from mexico city to the east coast run about $500; I don't know if this is a "whatever help he can get" sort of thing or how much he's capable of putting forward himself.
Apex 2014 is the placeholder for "big US tourney" as far as I'm concerned; I have no problem with changing that if they don't give pools or whatever and we decide to do it big elsewhere.
Not entirely sure where the money's going. Am I supposed to be holding it? I'm glad to do it and y'all know that the community's worth more to me than a couple hundred bucks, so I guess until someone tells me otherwise the paypal is bullock3@uni.illinois.edu. Post in the thread to confirm if you contribute. Obviously if he wins money it goes back to the biggest contributors/biggest contributors who want it, up to the amount donated, and obviously there'll be full refunds if he ends up not taking the money for whatever reason.
I'll start us off with $10. I'm broke.
Amount so far:
Battlecow, $10
Total: $10
