Hello Marth boards. Im getting back into the scene after a *long* break. I played competitively 03ish-07, but then stopped. Marth was always my main, and im picking my swordsman back up. Basically im curious if anyone could help fill me in on what I should be working on to get up to 2013 standard. Back in the day, Ken was the god of smash (and he forever will be to an extent), but I know that 07 Ken doesnt compare to most 2013 stuff....thats how it is in most games with most players. Anyways, are there any drills in particular I should be doing to get myself up to par? Ive been watching a good amount of PewPewU and PP, as well as M2K. Idk if im correct or not, but it seems like people arent using Nair as much, nor short hopped double fairs......It seems like marth relies much more on dash dance > grab. Im also not sure if marths matchups in general have changed. Im most curious about Marth v Falco.

tl;dr
could someone help me get up to 2013 standards? Any advice / suggestions would be great. Thanks guys.

There just so happens to be a new post for the peach, falcon and shiek match ups. I keep hearing all this talk of juggling and such. Getting your opponent in the air as much as possible and yeah grabs. You also want to change things up often and not be too predictable, but you prob already know that. Wish I could help more, I'm a bit of a noob though.

Hey there! Since I recently started playing this game again I can probably help you out a bit.

First, I highly recommend Mow's Drastic Improvement thread. I have followed a lot of it's tenants and I can testify to it's efficacy. It's a HUGE read now, and admittedly I haven't gotten caught back up on it, but it will set you on the right track.

Now with that said, here is a list of important things to work on and get solid. All of these things are achievable through CPU practice as well:

Survival DI practice : An easy way to improve this is to simply be aware of when you mess up, and whenever you know something went wrong, train yourself to input an appropriate survival DI.

Movement practice: This is probably the biggest thing that has changed since you left. Everyone is really good at pretty much all the movement options. Focus on training these things:

Wavelanding on plaltforms.
Wavelanding on the ground.
Wavelanding with a fast fall aerial (mix it up)
Precision dash dancing (a good way to practice is to go to pokemon stadium and run at specific lengths marked on the ground )
Pivot wavedash (mostly used for grabbing the ledge, dash towards the ledge, then away, and immediately wavedash off for the ledge grab)

Spacing practice: As you already know, spacing is one of the most important skills to employ with Marth. Re-familiarize yourself with all of Marth's tipper ranges, and also be sure to learn about how non-tippered attacks work. For example, it's often better if you are juggling an opponent that is close to the ledge to make sure to hit with the tip of the uair that is closest to the ledge. So if your opponent is on the left side, you want to hit it with the left most tip of the uair. This limits the amount DI will affect your opponents ability to DI in on the stage.

Also, a really neat training method is Mow's bomb training. Go to DL64, place two cpus at each end of the stage, and then place bombs on each platform. Learn to be able to space so that you can hit the bombs with your aerials without them exploding on you.

That's it for now, I hope this helps you!

Thanks Mookie! Youre actually one of the names that I remember from back when I was playing lol. Im glad to see youre still into smash. Im going to try searching for the drastic improvement thread that you mentioned, but in case I cant find it, could you (or someone else) post a link?

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Jab resets aren't new but people on '07 hardly ever did it.
Fair and Dair out of shield is a good option when pressured.
Short hop fast fall Fair + Dtilt mix ups are great for spacing.
Tech chasing is a really important part of the metagame right now, try to go for it whenever you can.
