My 6th sense tells me you should try using Marth.

But seriously, just use whoever you like the most. You won't be stuck with whatever character you end up choosing. You just need someone to start with. Choosing a main is like choosing a starter Pokemon. You obviously want to make the best choice so you can hurry up and get it to evolve, but you have to consider that along your Pokemon journey you may catch a different Pokemon who strikes your fancy and you may end up giving them more battle experience to evolve even faster and reach a higher peak than your original starter Pokemon.

Bulbasaur is for WIMPS

You will find that each character has their pros and cons, weaknesses and strengths, easy gimmicks and difficult advanced techniques. Sweet spotting may seem hard with Marth, but it's almost the same difficult for all other characters, and you will typically find things that are difficult with each character based on their traits (Example: Fox falls really fast, so SHFFLing correctly is a lot harder with him than with Marth). I would advise choosing based on whether or not you enjoy their play style (you might have to refer to videos of more experienced players in order to get an idea of how each character is typically played). That's what will increase your chances of playing your character for a long time. I picked Falco because I love how his full jump is ridiculously high, and I enjoyed the fast, combo heavy gameplay featured in Bombsoldier's Soldier of Fortune combo video. Lo and behold, I still play him heavily today. ^_^

Practice against a level 9 cpu only for tech skill. For example: I had noone good to play with (friends who didn't know that there was a shield in the game...) so I practiced level 9's. After realizing that I was getting into bad habits, I decided to step up my game, play some better people, and learn tech skill. Instead of practicing in training mode for hours, play against a CPU (don't get into any habits or think you're good cause you win, because beating level 9's has absolutely nothing to do with skill, because real people are alot better than them.) only for tech skill, and gradually work stuff into your game. At first, I couldn't short hop. I learned how to short hop. Then, I couldn't dash dance. I learned how to dash dance. Then, I couldn't tech. I learned how to tech. Then, I couldn't wavedash. I learned how to wavedash. Now, I can't L-cancel. I'm almost there. Pretty much, if your impatient like me, and have noone really to play with, try to get ur tech-skill up by playing CPUs, and making sure not to get into bad habits. Upping tech skill=only thing CPU is good for.

Well based on your user name, it looks like you should be using Marth haha.

But it really doesn't matter who you use. Just use anyone you want =) I suggest trying out all the characters, and just play the ones you like. You don't have to limit yourself to only playing 1 character either.

Oh and also, you should watch these:

Well, since Kirby and Luigi suck, I'd say you should keep to Marth. If your looking for good characters, go spacies, but they are **** hard to play as. I personally like Falco and Peach, but my Falco sucks since I can't L-cancel consistently. But because of the techniques need to play Peach (Auto-float and float-cancel, both of which I can do 100% of the time like breathing, for some reason) my peach is far better. She's less technical, so I like her better, too. I play Falco mostly for fun. And if your looking for easy, but good characters, Puff, Shiek, Marth, and if your smart and fairly good, Peach. While all of these characters still require tremendous skill, just like all chars of melee, they require less skill (particularly tech skill) than say, perhaps, spacies.

Don't worry about the tier list, if you really like Kirby, stick with it and you'll become better and better. Maybe you'll win a tourney with Kirby some day. :)

Heh.... You remind me so much of myself when I first joined the community. Pick a char, learn the advanced techniques like AXE said (I owe my life to those advanced techs, God bless Wak) Play some com players. Check and see if there are tournaments, if not, then make a thread asking about people near you, have them over at your house or vice versa. Pretty much how I got where I am now.

Oh, and by the way...

Welcome to Melee. Enjoy your stay!

I'd take Axe's advice and agree with it. Play everyone, see who you like then play that character.

Once you're more or less sure who your most comfortable character is try and concentrate on that one character more to learn the basics.

Go to tournaments/smashfests dude, getting beat up is the best way to get better.
Better players will know that you're new. Most likely that they won't go all out but still beat you using standard gameplay/tricks etc. When you are starting to get the hang of it you will get beat up even more, but at that point the others will have to go all out too. It might seem like you don't progress or even get worse, but don't give up, because you will be on the right track on becoming better.

i like falco somewhat but spacies are Not needed i just looked at the tier list....they are at the top
-edit-
also ive been reading a disscusion on melee stages and people seem to whine about fox being abused so why not make them happy and use someone else?
