Having trouble canceling the phantasm

How exactly is this performed? I know you can go 3 or more shorter distances than the full length when you phantasm. From what i've read you're supposed to simply keep tapping b (or whatever your special button is). But only rarely can I get him to go a slightly shorter distance. Where i've seen players make him go only a few spaces in front of him. How do you do such a dramatic cancel?

I've not tested myself, but in the words of Sakurai in the Dojo...

■After inputting the command for Fox and Falco’s side special attack, quickly press the special move button a second time to throw on the emergency brake and stop the attack.

Just tapp B before the little "tching" ^^

It's a little hard to get at the beginning (And after too ^^')
