Recovering safely to the stage without aerials flying at me while I'm still on the cypher. Could someone plz give me some advice on how to defend myself as best i can against aerials while cypher-flying back to the stage? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

well it kind of depends on the situation, could you be more precise ? I mean, are you coming from below the stage, or are you coming from the sides at the same height as the ground level, or finally from above ?

If it is from the ground, then you're going to want to grab that edge, if it's from the side, try to airdoge the attacks. Finally, if it is from above, try to c4 drop/detonate on your opponent below, since you can detonate it pretty quickly, you might be able to hit him, but that is of course if he is coming from right below you, if he tries to attack from an aerial side, you can allways try to hit him with neutral air or down air while advancing towards the stage.

Then again, it depends on sooooo many variables that your question can only be answerd by theorycrafting. Give me your opponent's characters and we can annalyse that furthermore :)

Sorry for being so vague. I'm mainly having trouble recovering from the sides. Whenever i seem to get close, all the opponent has to do is hit me further away (which he/she does). I played a pretty good Mario online yesterday. His ground game was fairly weak imo, I was always sheild-grabbing him as well as chain-grabbing him. But as soon as I went airborne, all hell broke loose. Kept getting juggled to no end. And then he'd throw me/hit me off stage. I usually get back no problem from above. It's only the sides that i need critical help on. I was pretty irritated when he'd spike me while i was cypher-flying because it seemed that there was nothing i could do (having just started the cypher-flying). I hope that's clear enough. Any more advice :confused:

First post: Well I've been searching round these forums for quite awhile, and probably the most effective recovery to getting back to the stage is using the Chain Kick as you're falling towards the stage. Thusly, you eliminate most aerials. (Some have higher priority)

Another solution is while high up in the air with the cypher, try DI-ing far left or far right from your opponent and drop a C4 in their paths, then detonate. If they continue to follow they'll be hit and if they choose to avoid it by not following, you'll have a safe landing zone.

By "chain kick" I'm assuming you mean f-air? If so I'll try to incorporate that in my recovery. Thanks for the input. Any more ideas? I gotta beat this Mario kid. He's hella cocky >.>

Aight, thanks for the clear-up. I'll be using those more often when recovering from the side now. I use N-air, and short-hopped D-air all the time, just never thought it would be as effective while recovering. Any more tips on this matter?

If you're knocked off the sides somewhat horizontally, and your timing is killer/you're feeling lucky, use a fair as you move towards the stage, usually jumping beforehand to line yourself up best you can. Sometimes it helps to fast fall from above if you're at a 45 degree angle or higher. If you practice this enough, you can spike characters who don't have a very aggressive/disjointed aerial coming to edgeguard you. I've done it on several chars, ROB, Pit, Charizard, MK to name a few. Just takes timing ;)

And the satisfactory feeling you get afterward is almost as good as a C4-stick KO. Almost. haha.

I know I'm a bit late on the issue, but one thing you can always take advantage of is the armor frames he has on his cypher. I don't know exactly where in the move they are at, but I know they exist. It seems whenever I recover and Olimar or Meta-knight try to slash me, it goes right through. Not to say you don't take the damage. Another rather suicidal strat is to when you could just land on the ground from the spot (Or you know your opponent is gonna attack you) slip out a nade. If your damage isn't too high, you'll both get hurt and you should make it safely.

Thanks Philanthropy, forgot about that. I think the armor frames start as soon as you begin cypher-flying (first few moments into it). So i guess I gotta time it til' when I'm close to the stage to pull out an armor-framed cypher to avoid spikes/aerials/etc. Thanks again everyone. Great info. And Strike feel free to add me so we can play sometime. I'm trying to get as many Northwestern players as i can get too. Also, do you have AIM or MSN? If so holla at me on either one of those. They're on my phone so I'm usually on.

IF your getting juggled a bit too much you can always pull out a grenade and if they hit you the grenade will blow you both up and give you some space to land.Or you can also airdodge about half way through your cypher to cancle it.

Yea that use to happen to me alot. What you can do is practice using the C4 as a recovery :p. (Get stuck under FD, vB, vB (detonate), cypher back to safety =D). It takes a little getting use to, but it helps a whole lot. Try and anticipate when you're not gonna make it to the stage, and while cyphering, keep spamming vB. Timing is key. Otherwise you'll end up fast-falling to hell >.>
