Has Anyone Considered Trying to Make Fast Smash the Tournament Standard

I was wondering this, because I know that a large reason that Melee is still popular is because of its fast-paced gameplay. Because of this, I find it odd that playing Fast Smash (an option in Special Smash) isn't very common.
The Street Fighter Community endorses Turbo mode, so could we discuss it for Smash Bros.?

i used to think this way too, but the ground speed isnt what is meant by "fast". its the overall flow and combo potential of the game.
so stuff like faster falling and longer hitstun is needed. Ground speed is pretty fast in this game as it is.

Imo if we had any special smash standard it would be heavy gravity. Now that truely "speeds" up the game.

I'm just suggesting this. I actually prefer 4's speed to Melee, but Fast Smash would make it "more exciting to watch".

At those speeds some inputs become impossible, making for sloppy matches. So no, I don't think it's a good idea. Try watching Sheik vs Sheik on speed-mode and just try to get excited, you won't ;)...

Although it will speed up the game, it still won't have the same movement options that were in Melee.

Sm4sh was built around it's normal speed. Changing it to Fast Smash would mess a lot up a lot of things.

Also, this is Sm4sh. Not Melee. I don't get it why people try to make something like Melee when it clearly isn't and shouldn't be.

I wasn't trying to say "Let's make it more like Melee."
Just faster paced. More akin to Street Fighter 2 Turbo.

Then why did you mention Melee? Because if you want this to be like Street Fighter, it's not happening since Smash and Street Fighter are very different even if they're both fighting games.

Thought it might attract more people. And Street Fighter reference was to show that Turbo can be used competitively with great success.

Just think of it as Turbo Smash Bros.

Like I said, this is Smash, not Street Fighter. And I just proved why Fast Smash wouldn't be good at all.

I don't get what you're trying to accomplish with this thread...

I host a tournament called 'One Minute Madness'
Its where you have 2 lives and you have one minute to kill your opponent before time runs out. People get so hyped where I am at. Some people suggested I run it at 3 minutes. But the point is - the gameplay changes when you have only one minute. Lol

He's using Street Fighter games 'turbo modes' as a example for his question on whether anyone has attempted a tournament or event, or generaly pushed for Sped up Smash, via Special Smash.

Just because a game is 'faster' or made faster doesn't automatically make it SF or anything like it.

Anyways, I haven't heard of anyone pushing fast Smash. But there's a thread on here where people are pushing for the use of a specific custom equipment (Smooth Lander Badge? or something) coupled with the Special mode 'Heavy Gravity' to emulate something more of Melee's offensive style.
Fortunately it never caught on, or heard much of it.

I pray that these kind of threads will vanish over time, it adds absolutely zero contribution towards competitive gameplay, makes for stupid discussions and arguments, and overall, they are kind of annoying. These threads should go into the General section.

Like said above, some imputs are harder at Fast Smash. I tried to do a Fox v Fox match on FD on Fast Heavy Smash and, it was hard as heck because I have to press the Analog with more strength.

When people say they want the game to be faster, I think they mean the flow of combat and player interaction. Faster stronger safer attacks might be welcome, but people don't want to see faster rolls, airdodges and defensive options in general. Speeding everything up doesn't really make the game more interesting.

I can't believe people would be against this. Harder inputs??? Have you ever tried to play melee competitively??? It's not nearly as hard as that...

I love smash 4 at 1.5 speed. i KNOW without a doubt that if 1.5x speed was adopted even as a side tournament, the popularity of smash 4 would grow big time. Id love to see this happen.

It changes nothing but the games speed, all recovery, strategy, inputs are all the same. The game is just FASTER, that is it. It is way more exciting to play and to watch. YES, it is more difficult at first, but the difficulty is nothing compared to melee's.... that means nothing. Melee's difficult inputs, tech, and speed are why it is so popular.

Im sad people cannot see the potential in it.... i know without a doubt it would hype up smash 4 beyond what anyone here see's.

Ben Holt you definitely know what your talking about, the speed of melee is what makes it exciting to watch, you are definitely on to something, i came on the forum to post this same idea untill i saw your thread, and was really saddened that people do not understand the potential it has to greatly increase the hype and spectators of smash 4.

If anyone hosted a side tournament at 1.5x speed with a big pot to bring the top players, stream those matches and put the vids on youtube... everything would change. - for the better for smash 4.

When i play on 1.5 speed i just see it as usual speed after a moment. Some thing are harder to react to but it depend of the reaction time. But some input are not only harder. Using the sticks will result at a 50/50 because sometimes it's just don't work. And that's intolerable.

Interestingly enough, I strongly believe that Smash 4 has around the same base speed as Melee. Melee just feels much faster because, not only the ATs, but because of the high gravity. If you put high gravity and smooth lander on, you can see that the game becomes very melee-esque in terms of combos, speed, etc.

Also fast is way too fast.
