Guide or no guide.

Okay, I may sound noob but my question is:
When SSBB comes out should I use a guide and get the characters faster or try to figure out how to get the characters by myself to create a funner experience?
With a guide I'd get more character and stages faster so that when I play with friends I'd have more characters.
Without a guide I'd be considerably slower but the surprises of unlockables might be fun.
So what shall it be? I go to the boards for advice.

I doubt you're going to want or need a strategy guide unless you want to have an accurate list of all the collectibles in the game, and even so, you'll be able to find that on the net within a couple of days. Otherwise, all you're going to have to do is carry your previous Smash knowledge over to this game and you'll be golden.

No Internet?!?
Use guides if you want.

The surprise of a character only lasts until you see them, if you use guides, you'll know every character in the game, and you'll know exactly how to unlock them. It doesn't make it easier in any way.

But it depends what kind of a person you are, if you would rather stumble upon them by accident, don't use guides.

I am going to purchase a guide. How do you people guess what needs to be done in order to unlock more characters? In fighting games, the process is so illogical at points! Sure, some are straightforward (such as conquering Adventure Mode and whatnot), but others are pure luck (play smash for 20 hours; I suppose you would just stumble upon that eventually). Either way, I do not see unlocking characters as some entertaining adventure. I want it done, and I want it done NOW. Plus, the pretty pictures don't hurt either. ^_^

I'd rather use the internet... specifically code websites, mainly because there are no pictures. I'd rather be surprised at the character in-game...

reminds me of the first time I saw Mr. Game and Watch...

Lol exactly. Stumbling onto them by accident would be a pain.
Teh_internets will help a lot cause Ill be on the boards anyways.
I could always find guides on gamefaqs.
And the only reason I want a published guide is because of the pictures and that it's solid.

I buy guides for the sheer pleasure of having it next to me while I play, or reading it in bed at night. They explain things better without the "ZOmG U CARROT UNLOCK SONIK??? SUxxORSSZZZ"

Unlocking new fighters in a fighting game is a chore. I'd rather just do what needs to be done to get it over with so I can start using the new fighter. Waiting around to stumble upon the fighter would drive me crazy. I need every advantage for online battles.

Well, you wonder why you bought a guide to a fighting game after a while... >.>
Other than that, it was pretty ok. It had every move that a char could do, and it's damage rate. It also had "quick" ways you could beat the targets, I think. And, of course, it had how to unlock everything in the game.

Was the guide for Melee any good?
It depends on which version you chose. There was one non-Nintendo guide that was really good. My friend owned one, and I wanted it but could never find it. I have the Nintendo brand guide. While it's not that bad (it has all the important stuff), it was loaded with errors. I seriously took a pen and marked it up heavily. The game probably changed a bit between the creation of the guide and the final release. There are times where it would say "press B to do this" when it was clearly supposed to be A.

i'm pretty sure that online play will already have all of the characters unlocked for you anyway. (super mario strikers did)

and if i was gonna use a guide, it would just be to find out who is playable and not how to get them. Probably after a week, if i didnt have someone i'd use the guide.

I took my guides to school one day and...lo and behold...gone.
It was still useful, I don't remember which guide I 'ad, but the cover looked exactly like the boxart.

I'd try my darndest to find every last thing on my own, but if all else fails, I'll buy the Prima guide. I'm willing to spend the money.

I know what you mean, some parts in melee were completely random and weird, and i still don't understand how I unlocked certain characters.

But at the same time, that made the game so much fun, because I never knew what was coming next.

I'm going to find out exactly how to get each character as soon as I possibly can. I mean, I knew pretty much all the characters that were going to be in Melee and how to unlock them a while before the game was even released, thanks to smashbrosmelee.com and SWF. ^ ^ That way I got all the characters in about a week, and immediately started enjoying the game at its fullest.

Lol yeah. With SSB you heard about how to get the characters and the stage by just listening to other people. "Oh yeah normal 3 lives." And you got the stuff in no time.

With SSBM my experience was I saw all the characters at a party. :ohwell: So I guess I used teh_internets to find them all. The only surprise was G&W cause at the party that character wasn't unlocked yet.

I think the bigger surprise is the unlockable more than how it's unlocked.

I'll probably just mess around until I want to unlock then look at a guide, at least thats what I did in melee.

QFT.

No guide for me. I'll probably look on the internet after like 2 years to see what stickers/trophies I'm missing, but other than that, I hate guides.

I have yet had to use a guide to beat any game in my life, and I dont plan on doing that for a game as great as brawl.

How do you beat a smash game? I never use guides either except on fighting games since delaying the unlocking process means that much less time in the tournament arena.

I'm going to go through the game once with everyone, once in the hardest mode with minimum lives, and try out all the BTT or HRC type games they have and attempt to get good scores. After that, I'll go online and look up how to get what i missed.

I'm going to use the guide to unlock every character and stage just like I've been doing for the previous smash games. That way, I can unlock them faster and not let some mentality get in my way.
