I played a lot of blue and silver, and then an insane amounts of Ruby (I think I had 7 Maxed pokemon)

But anyway, I realize now that there is more to this game then just lvling up as strong as possible. Before I continue playing what are some good sites to check on how to raise pokemon properly? I read most of the stickies, as well I'm reading through psypokes.com.

Right now I'm just trying to get my Piplup and Skarly to lvl 10 lol.

Double post, I know.
But now I got more things to ask.

1] If for example.. right now I train my pokemon to 30's,40's and by then I would have probably messed up their stats cause I didn't train them right.. Can I just go back to noob towns capture low levels and train those up again properly (When I learn how to after screwing up the first time)

I would think the answer is yes.. but just double checking. I wouldn't wanna delete my save file and start from the beginning ~.~

2] How are EV points distrubuted? If I caught a lvl 35 or something. Wouldn't it have to be lvl 1 pokemon for the stats to be 255/255 and 6 spare points EQUALLY? If it's already leveled up that means I can't max out two stats.. and I don't remember any lvl 1 pokemon around

3] Are EV points gained off in-game trainers as well? Cause their pokemon can give mine different stats.. and that would suck getting the ones you don't want.

Really would like to know this stuff before I start playing @.@

any newly obtained pokemon from anywhere but a trade with a friend will have 0 EVs

EVs are maxed out at 510 total, 255 in each stat max

it takes 4 EVs to increase a stat by 1 point, 510 is not divisble by 4 so you're left with 2 useless EVs, also never put more than 252 EVs into one stat cause you have wasted EVs, the most common EV distribution is 252/252/6, which means there are 252 EVs in two stats, for a gain of 63 points in those stats, then 6 EVs in another stat for an increase of 1

yes you can catch a low level poke and retrain it, but it's better to breed the poke because the chance of getting high IVs is higher in bredding than by catching it (that's also solely dependent on the parents of the poke too)

and yes, you gain EV points from EVERY battle you fight, including fighting your friends

Correction: You gain EVs from every battle that gives you EXP. And I believe you don't get EXP when fighting your friends.

IMO, I wouldn't worry about EVs while you're going through the game. But still, as a Chimchar, killing Starlys but running from Bidoofs is OK.

Yeah..do what almost everyone else does. Just go through the game and not really worry on EV'ing right now because you can just re-breed for natures, IV's(if you REALLY are picky on them), etc...It's not worth it if you're not done the Pokemon league yet..

Oh and I don't think you understand that each battle that gives experience gives you EV's...every and any Pokemon give you EV's for each stat. For example, Bidoof gives you 1HP EV.., then you have the Power Items, Macho Brace, possibly PKRS, etc. Of course, I only said this just incase you didn't know or understand.:) ..when you're done the game, you should ask more about this stuff then so you can actually go and do it.;)

Yeah I read a bunch of guides. I understand everything. Including which are best to fight for each stat, using items, breeding, sweepers and what not.

I currently just stock my pokemon in my "EV Boxes" in storage, and if I ever use any for completing the game I put them in regular boxes.
Though may be useless cause of IV breeding sounds like one of those things I'll spend hours and hours doing till it's perfect x.X as well as their nature may not be the one I want, but w/e I like to feel that I'm at least making some attempt at properly raising pokemon while beating Pearl.

Real reason why I got into this game is because when I main Pokemon trainer in Brawl, I'd like to **** hardcore in D/P as well when I travel to tourneys. Thanks for the help. :)

no, you get EVs from battling your friends, it says it on smogon, serebii, and even gfaqs, you just don't get exp

i've seen people say you can use your friends to help EV train just by battling them so...

Really? I could've sworn that you only get EVs in EXP battles.

But...

Keep in mind that only battles where EXP counts gives you an Effort Point, so no battling over a link cable or battle tower to get Effort Points.

It's fact. You can't get EVs unless you gain exp. during a battle. Simple as that. I have a good amount of friends who hack to speed up the EV gain process and they don't get EVs from battling each other.

I really wouldn't start worrying about the competitive aspect until you've completed the game or pretty far in, with considerable funds at your expense. Don't worry if you messed up your Pokemon that you use to get through the game. Their natures and IVs are probably unusable anyway. You can play online competitively to get a general idea of the team you would want to use, then breed for decent IVs in game.
