Going to my first tournament today, any suggestions?

My friend helped organize a tournament in Montreal today. 60 pre-registered for singles last time I checked, so the attendance should be quite good. I have played many hours against my friends, but this is my first tournament. Any tips? What characters do I not want to see as an olimar main? What are my best counter pick stages?

I second wolf, lucas and ness. Are there any characters that should scare olimar enough for me to take one of these? Thanks in advance guys!

Olimar doesn't like to see Meta Knight, Mr. Game & Watch, Wolf, and R.O.B., consider switching on those matchups. I, too, second Lucas and I use him for each of those muchups except against Meta Knight who I just 'deal' with so maybe you'll do the same. Remember how good Olimar is on Battlefield and other small stages, pray no one picks Rainbow Cruise.

Probably the most underrated and important piece of advice: EAT HEALTHY ALL DAY. Seriously, bring a cooler with you and pack it with some healthy snacks (I almost always have a bag of carrots with me) and keep yourself fed all day. Refrain from buying candy or anything that's gonna ultimately bring you down. I went to a tournament about a month ago and I didn't eat all day with the exception of some mcdonalds around 3. Singles started around 7:00, and I didn't realize until after the fact that because I hadn't eaten, my reflexes were slower and my decision making was poor, and I was getting flustered easily whenever I'd miss a combo/have a combo done on me.

And yeah, what someone above me said, take names, and play as many different people as you possibly can. I generally go to tournaments with a group of friends, and I do my best not to play any of them the whole time I'm there so I can get experience against other players/characters.

Have fun! Tournaments are great environments.

Edit: Pick luigi's mansion if it isn't banned. Then do Uthrow->as many Usmashes as you can-Dsmash when you are on the bottom layer of the mansion underneath the ceiling

eat breakfast
have fun
take a shower beforehand -_-
have a positive mindset, if you lose one match, don't let it get to you, just focus and let your hands do all the work ^^
talk a lot with friends after matches to keep your mind off any kind of stress
if you have to play a "big name", don't freak out, just play as if they were one of your friends.
most importantly, have fun :D

also, make sure the seeding is done correctly so you don't play anyone from your region/friends early in the matches

Kind of obvious, but watch out for ledgeless stages if they're not banned. It would suck to be beating yourself up all day about a stock you lost when you weren't thinking... but then again, that's just olimar basics lol

Thanks for the help guys! The food thing came in handy, most people were starving. I didn't get too high... My pool had 3 metaknights, who just spammed tornado and there was absolutely nothing I could do. If olimar has a move to cancel that thing out, I certainly did not find it. I still held my own though, and was eventually eliminated by a toon link who basically stole a stock from me at the start of the game at 0% with his downsmash. sent my flying down and sideways as if I had 150% damage. I have yet to understand that. I had to leave after the semi-final game, but I got to see Ace and Ally play, which was quite ridiculous.

Nair? really? this is the umpteenth situation I've encountered that I wish I had a wii so I could just go test it myself.

You can also grab MK out of the tornado if he is close enough to the ground. It's always awesome hearing an MK player go "oh what??" anytime I pull that off

I've actually just been countering with Kirby when I see MK. I actually know close to nothing about Kirby, it's all raw talent, but I love the neutralB-tornado combo, it really frustrates MK players haha.

and yes, I wrote those previous 2 sentences for the sheer purpose of saying "raw talent."

that annoying and lucky thing happened to me last week in a doubles tournament match. The TL got me twice in a row at 0% i was ****ing pissed! :D Although, because Oli is so sexy and hawt at the same time we still won...but still annoying

someone else mentioned luigi's tornado being a pain in the ***. You can d-tilt out of it, I just discovered this vsing my friend last week. Now the matchup is omgez mode
