After another few awful games in FG I just have to let this rant out. I know you guys are coming here expecting another complaint thread because OP lost against a good opponent, but this is a little different. OP lost against someone he was beating the smash out of and outmaneuvering but ultimately lost because of sudden lag burst.
To better explain, I main Pikachu. I play him with the understanding that I die easier and have to rack up more damage to kill so therefore I use my speed to outmaneuver my opponent. I spent a lot of time in training practicing his various abilities, especially an important skill called quick attack which I feel like is one of Pikachu's greatest weapons. I practice the hell out of my quick attack in training, play games against npcs using only my quick attack. For anyone who doesn't know, after you hit Pika's up B you input two directions and he can zip in those directions in a blink of an eye.
Well anyways, go into FG. In the little practice room before the game starts, I warm up my QAs, practicing getting two hits in on my opponent, falling off the stage and recovering from any spot that isn't directly under the stage. Great! I'm ready to go. Last two people I played a bunch of games against were Captain Falcons. Both were very predictable and for the most part, I punished every little move. One guy ran into my thunderbolt 4 times before he figured out it was a bad idea. But then I started noticing that slight little lag. I'm falling so I hit my bair and it takes almost a whole second to register. My dash attacks were hitting several frames past where I intended them to, making pika look like a moron running past falcon and headbutting nothing. Then I try to recover off stage. Should be easy. Up B then diagonally up right then strait left... except that strait left never registers and I free fall to my doom. Sometimes my enemy is nice enough to try and gimp me off stage allowing me to get another QA in to safety. Whats even more frustrating is trying to QA around your opponent, except that second one doesn't register and you fall into a charging smash attack which happened a few times.
Honestly its not even that I lost but that I lost due to stupid tiny errors. To make your opponent your little play toy then suddenly its like Pikachu's headbutt injuries kick in and he can't function. God if brawls online was worse then this then I feel really bad for those that suffered through.
Not much left to say. I mean I really don't mind losing. When I end up in a almost lag free match I will stay as long as I can even if I'm getting beat bad. I learned a lot getting slapped around by much better players, but to really outplay someone and then get messed up by a few lag spikes... Man it just gets me worked up. It makes me feel like all my improvements, everything I do to make my game better is for nothing. Makes me wonder if all those Little Macs I LOL tossed off the stage couldn't recover because that half a second lag was the difference in reaching the ledge or not.
Edit: Since I made a thread called "God awful online" I might as well summarize the rest of my feeling on the online component. I may be new to competitive smash, I've played many games competitively online: SC2, DotA2, Counter Strike, ect. And I have to say that Smash 4 feels very striped of features. I love the game itself that Sakurai and his team built. It's absolutely beautiful but I feel like he is very out of touch with what builds a good online competitive game. Yes live gatherings and tournaments is the way to go but smash could be great online too and possibly make a bigger esports presence.
