Hey all. I don't expect any of you to have heard of me, unless you are from UCI. And even then, you probably still wouldn't, but that's cool 'cause I'm a newb :bee:

So. In the interest of getting better and improving as a player, I've sought out your help. Please feel free to leave advice, critique, comments, etc., and make a Devl a little bit better at what he does: smashing with Sheik!

USC's 1st Annual "GAME ON!" Tournament - April 9, 2010
So, after the success that was FUSION's Melee tournament last quarter, I figured out something. I suck and I want to get to get better. Conclusion? Go to another tournament, and get more experience, against people around my skill level or better. So a small number of my friends and I went up to USC, and entered their first major Smash tournament (that I've heard of anyways).

Loser's Semi-Finals
Devl (Sheik) vs. K (Fox) 1
Devl (Sheik) vs. K (Fox) 2 So yea... -.-' Don't ask about 2:08, I have no idea what happened there. My guess is that I was trying to dtilt/smash or something, and, well, failed.
Devl (Sheik) vs. K (Fox) 3

I'll upload more matches as they come up, and edit them in here.

Thanks to you all in advance!

I watched the first two matches. You need to be more patient and pay more attention to your opponent. You have a tendency to rush in and do stuff independently of what the opponent is doing. One example would be that your opponent was shielding and sidestepping a lot and your response was to D-tilt and Jab his shield.

As kirby kaze said, a lot of you getting punished has to do with patience, you need to bait him into attacking a bit more. also you need to work on your short hopping , a lot of the time you became vunerable in the air because of a full hop. with ledgeguarding grabbing the edge and using bairs covers a lot of foxes options, and it is very safe.

a bit more advanced correction is working on smash Di'ing the shine and the dair when fox aproaches to prevent getting shine upsmashed or grabbed. i didnt see K shining you that much but you will surely encounter a fox who will.

Also sheild grabbing is good, but dont get to comfortable with it. if they lcancel the dair and shine you wont be able to grab. Stick with what works but try not to make habbits.

@ kirbykaze: Okay, duly noted. In terms of playing patiently, how can I help develop that? My thoughts are that in practice/playing with friends, I should just slow down my general gameplay, and focus on them as opposed to myself. On a sidenote, against sidestep-happy and shielding chars., usually the best option is to dsmash, yes?

@ ministry: I'm seeing a trend here. =P When you say bait him into openings, how do i go about doing that (my abuse of rushing forward and wding back aside)? The techskill is completely on me though - this is just a case of me not having experience and getting nervous/not focusing I think, because in friendlies and in practices with friends, I can SH on command. Related to that, I realize my edgeguarding was atrocious -.-' All during that tournament, I was just freezing up or just making plain stupid decisions (as you'll see in future videos). As far as shines go, I've played Zhu a couple times before, and he just plain ***** me with shines, albeit with Falco =D I was watching K throughout the tournament, and saw he wasn't landing his l-cancels consistently, and thought I could take advantage of that...by the time I actually played him though, he cleaned up his tech skill a bit. =/

What I've gathered so far:
1.) Be moar patient.
2.) Watch/focus on the other guy
3.) Clean up/tighten tech skill

Thanks for this so far guys, keep it coming. Still waiting for the other vids to upload...

I really dislike D-smashing shields. D-smash vs shield is really complicated when you actually break down all the stuff that can happen. I'd recommend just waiting a bit and grabbing their sidestep lag. Or grabbing their shield, if they like to hold it.

If they like to sidestep without the shield, I think D-smash is better because of its tendency to beat moves by its startup and big hitbox.

To answer the question on how you should go about implementing a means to decide how you should pick your moves, I think slowing down gameplay a bit in friendlies and paying attention to what they're doing is pretty good. You don't really have to consciously put tons of effort in, but noting little things like their shielding, dodging, and rolling tendencies, what moves they like to defend with, and then picking your own moves accordingly is really good. Your style will suffer a bit by doing this for a while, but you'll make smarter decisions in the long run and it become second nature pretty quickly.
