geno was in the direct but not as a character

ok guys so basically right after the battle arena splash screen if you look on the left you can see 2 avatar icons and one of them is geno in his sprite form from mario rpg

It's in around 20:55. It's not a spirit. It's just a player icon which can likely be picked by the player. This was shown in the online section. All this is in the Geno thread.

Geno's there as an icon on a chip. I don't think it means much for confirmation or deconfirmation considering pirate K Rool is also seen and variants of playable characters are Spirits.

Even if it is a Spirit, this doesn't mean deconfirmation. Plenty of playable characters appear as Spirits. Considering Vergeben's leaks have been very accurate, with Incineroar and Ken being revealed this direct, it is very likely that there will be a Square Enix DLC character coming. Who knows? It could be Geno.

The icons are from what I can tell sorted by playable characters, then assist trophies, then game series. Based of that one could assume Geno will not be playable
