Why aren't we funding this?

srsly tho, we should, like legit, it's smashboards duty, it would be historical.
You'd need to be able to get an asking price from square enix, if they were even in the market to sell, and somehow have the contact information to get that asking price.

I personally do not know how to reach a CEO of square. Or their licensing department, or their character rights people.

Notwitthstanding, buy me Croco while you're out, eh?

The kickstarter would need a corporate lawyer to fund just for these purposes.

I actually wouldn't mind Geno this time, and didn't wanted him back in Brawl. If he gets in its only because all the noise he made during the Brawl speculation era (couldn't be because the trucks of games he has appeared in recently, that is for sure).
At this point obviously the Sakurai team know about people wanting him. Its up to them if they think he is still worthy. At least a trophy is at order if they are asking 3rd parties for trophy rights anyways.

Buy the rights to Geno and the SMRPG cast? I'm in.

I find myself daydreaming at work about how Geno, Ridley, and K. Rool getting the last trailer because of their popularity pre-Brawl. One can hope for a trailer with all three to hype the game before release.
Those 3 are the 3 I want the most, I daydream about it too, then I hate myself after realizing it may never be a reality.

Kickstarter Project: Buy Rights to Geno and donate to Nintendo. =p
YES! I'd love to donate the rights to Nintendo :)

I would laugh hysterically if the rights to any SMRPG character was something like $~250. May seem a bit much but come on, like one person couldn't afford it to save us all the heartache. Geno would be pricier but who wouldn't want Jonathon Jones instead lol
They probably don't care about Geno, we can start the offer at like 10 bucks probably :p

I've searched high and low and even emailed Square Support a few times asking how. They don't even respond with a "we can't give you that information" email, they just ignored it. I'm not sure how to go about this.. But I hope my D-list youtube status can be of use.

I think that's the first copycat Geno thread here.

Oh I like that one

The rumor that came out last year is that the reason Rosalina is shoe horned into so many things is because Nintendo is planning on continuing the Galaxy games but with having Rosalina be the lead instead of Mario, making it a new franchise and allowing Mario to explore new territories. I too like the idea of Rosalina and Geno working together because I feel like their basic concepts as characters go together. Geno's a star that defends Star Road and Rosalina's an adopted "momma" to the stars. I could see them developing a working relationship akin to Pit and Palutena.
GenoXRosalina shipping, eh?

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if a kickstarter for that didn't bring in a boatload of money, in all seriousness. Even if it didn't reach its goal or Square refused to sell, the money could be put toward buying a sizeable chunk of Square stocks or donated to charity or something. ...And now I really want to do this. X_x;

Well we should take a few precautions before doing that. By somehow contacting someone at Square that can help us, and then if they wanted to sell, we start the Kickstarter so we can try to raise the funds within a month. Which, probably wouldn't get too much money, depending on how we went about it.

But if we just started a kickstarter out of nowhere, it would be thoughtless, and I think Japanese companies would find it rude of us to buy something, then just donate it to them because we want them to use the character.

Well yeah, clearly. How do companies contact each other to make deals like that? I learned in the Rayman thread that Nintendo has this dude named Mark Ryan who deals with marketing and relations with other companies. Who does that for Square? Does anybody here know?

The unfortunate reality of it is that the game is being released in 2 months. Not enough time for the kickstarter, or the programming to be done if he isn't in the game yet.

Everything that's in the game or going to be in the game is solidified at this point.... All we can do is wait, hope, and pray to the video game gods.

I'm sure we've all come to terms with that, we are all rather talking about the possibility of making history by doing something nintendo should have done themselves. Plus, if we were to be successful, we guaranteed either DLC or Smash 5. There would be no excuses if he was denied yet again and a **** storm beyond anything imaginable would hail down if they even considered a reason not to.

We must do it for our children's children.

They'll never forget us.

Lest they forget.

SOME ONE JUST START THE KICKSTARTER AND LETS SEE WHAT HAPPENS! lol

We'll get gamexplain in on it too who knows.

As mentioned before, it would be wise to get the ball rolling first before rushing into things. Although Square may not be wanting to respond, just starting a random kick starter with an arbitrary amount would only spell doom on everything.

1. The amount -- how much? Can't oversell it since we're playing with people's money here. Undersell it and they'll say no and we sit with nothing accomplished. Willy nilly and they can outright refuse since we had no discussion with them on the subject.

2. The negotiation -- who exactly would be the best person to sit down and talk? Obviously you would need somebody who speaks Japanese as well as a lawyer to ensure all documentation is correct (if we get that far.) We can only try to reach them so much before its false hope, which it already is.

3. The prizes - what exactly can we do as prizes? We can't use the SMRPG license we are essentially buying, the name belongs to Nintendo and until the deal is done we can't use the characters we would essentially try to acquire.

4. The duration - it could very well take months to establish a beginning connection with SE. Starting a kick started now would only fail to serve its purpose since you can't sit on it, its against the terms of use.

I've went a friendly email to 3 different support emails I've seen for square about this proposal. Hope to hear back from any of them, although probably may have to go the next step further if we choose to actually try doing this.

I just noticed you guys came up with the kickstarter idea before I did, LOL

Though I was partially joking because of the reputation kickstarter projects by non-major companies are getting

Take Yogcasts latest Kickstarter thing. They cancelled the game with no refunds

We could probably get away with that :p but we can't do that to our fellow Geno fans! As far as rewards go, there isn't much we can do, other than include their names on the list of fans that love Geno. It would go down in history and each donator will be included :D
Plus, they could potentially influence his appearance in a new game. :x

Nintendo said create a game for us and they did. Unfortunately it was all their ideas that Nintendo allowed them to keep, rather than buying the IP outright. SMRPG is a FF clone or a standard Square game. Culex is even a nod to the series. How I wish nintendo would have kept those rights like they did with other games like DKC, Star Fox Adventures et cetera
If this is true, then SMRPG is the best FF game ever.

the way I see this whole buying Geno thing is that it would be an insanely awesome thing to do, but we need people to run it, get a lawyer and just people in general to be willing to do more than just the kickstarter. This whole idea involves professional companies its not just going to the store and buying the rights to the SMRPG Cast. In all it could be possible but we should wait until after Sm4sh comes out and we know for sure geno isn't in the game.

Sent 5 emails to different sections of the Nintendo support, hope to hear what they feel of the situation. Although I feel that side wouldn't ever go past the "specialist" and just be denied right off the get go.

If we really wanted to get this lifted off the ground, we would need to start a miniature movement to get the big Whigs attention to know this isn't some random thing we hope to do.

Well we've got the idea, come release if Geno isn't in Smash at all, we can take this seriously :)

Exactly, which really is a shame /: there isn't any real easy way to approach this and sound professional.

"Hey, a group of people on the Internet would like to buy one of the rights you have. Not just any rights, the one you have concerning Nintendo. How will we pay, well with Kick starter of course! Hello?!"

Its doomed from the start and doomed if it even gets a response. Seeing as how even before we get anything off the ground you'll have to truly negotiate and arrange everything BEFORE kick starter so that would have to come out of pocket unless we start a kick starter for a future kick starter lol.

"Help pay a lawyer and a Japanese translator on the off chance Square would even consider selling one of their hidden gems they have on Nintendo! Hello?!

I'm well aware this was entirely meant to be a joke but one part of me does wish what IF we could do this? You really don't know until you try, which is still a mile long shot in the dark but hey, what isn't nowadays?

I'll donate if it's a Geno/Mallow package deal. Because getting Geno and leaving Mallow behind seems wrong to me.

If we had a shot at the whole shebang that really would be the route I'd take. Just going after Geno would be disgracing the game as a whole. Yes this is mainly a theoretical attempt at one person but if you could save a whole series, wouldn't you want to? There are so many great characters that it would be amazing to see them return in a Mario game. Imagine a new game being released with the Mario Galaxy name but having Smithy being the prime villain this time, having gone straight to the star kingdom as revenge for his defeat. Shooting across the universe in an attempt to save dreams for stars as well as plentiful returning baddies guarding individual star relics that lead to other galaxies being tortured by smithy. Geno and Mallow could be possible playable characters in multiplayer just like SM3DW, as well as Luigi, Toad, Peach, Bowser, Yoshi, Rosalina and secret characters Jonathon Jones and Booster! (Ok, that's my dream game with SMRPG playing in a Mario Galaxy visual and plot.)

I'd actually pay money to see Geno back. We can actually get this to work with enough people. We might not reach a lot of money, but for something that's never been done before and getting support at all, would be something huge and I'm sure Nintendo and Square would hear the news.
