This game came out of the Playstation 1 in July of 1999. Reviews game it roughly an 8 out of 10 for the most part and is sometimes noted to have cashed out on the success of Pokemon at the time. This game featured pre-rendered artistic backgrounds instead of polygonal backgrounds. What does this mean? Imagine painting a picture and pasting it in the background and draw invisible borders on it where you're allowed to move. That's what the background is like with Jade Cocoon.
Here's a basic outline of the story. You play as a teenage boy, probably about 17, named Levant. It is tradition is his village, called Syrus, to have a cocoon master at all times. The cocoon master is a person, call it the alphamale of the village sans the chieftain, who has the role of protecting the village from the animals/beasts that reside in the forests bordering the village. The cocoon master has 3 tools: His weapon, a flute, and his minions. The weapon is just that, a blade, axe, et cetera. The flute is a special flute. The cocoon master is trained to use the flute to capture minions inside cocoons with the flute (A la Pokemon). They are called "Fireflies" when you capture them and once you take them back to be purified to your wife (Mahbu), you can use up to three of them at a time.
ANYWAY, going off topic here. A swarm of beasts swept over the village and put some of the village in a sleep that will not fade and the only known cure is an herb called Calabas. The Calabas herb is only known to be in a forest, but no one's certain which one. Levant sets off to the Beetle forest, meets Koris who was a friend of your dad's.
WHAT'S THIS? LEVANT'S DAD?! STORY TIME!
Levant's dad was the former cocoon master of Syrus. Why former? Well, he left his wife, Levant's mother. What prompted him to do this you ask? Well, all I'll say is that he did not like what he was causing his wife to go under when she purified his minions and he set off on a mission.
So yep, his dad. He meets Koris and he gives you the obligatory tutorial information and leaves. After you explore the forest and reach his hut at the end, he tells you that he researched Calabas and only found one thing: a powder that can wake the sleeping, which must of course be the calabas herb ground up. He gives you the Dragonfly key and tells you to talk to the bird man, Kikinak. You go back to your village, do some talking, learn some stuff, and go to the Dragonfly forest.
Like Pokemon, in the Dragonfly forest, the monsters are stronger than the Beetle Forest's monsters. Anyway, you meet a poacher there who is somewhat of a recurring rival figure (Like Gary/Blue). You kick his sorry butt and meet Kikinak. This guy's voice is priceless, I swear to this day his voice actor is the same one that does Cosmo from Fairly Odd Parents. Anyway, he gives you the spider key and Calabas powder and tells you that Yamu in the Spider forest gave him the powder and you should ask him. You become friends then leave and talk to Mother Garai (Think of her as your Grandma). She tells you of the legend surrounding Kikinak and Yamu. Basically, they were both divine spirits created by Elhrim (the God of the forest). Kikinak fell to lust and was made a birdman and Yamu fell to greed and became this coconut shaped dude. Well, since he fell to greed that means he's a hardass to get the calabas from so you have to give him your freaking wedding ring.
That's all I'll say, after that the story takes a turn and gets pretty epic, so you'll have to play the game yourself for that. I now leave you with some music.
