tl;dr - Hosting company for Galaxy Chicago closing June 25th, therefore Galaxy Chicago will most likely close at that time. Increased ping times and lag may be a result of this. New York server has been upgraded and will remain. Also, I'm in San Jose for the summer if people want to play - contact me.
Hello all,
Ultimate Game Server (UGS), the company that has been hosting The Galaxy server (and previously Emularena, and also West Wonderland), will be closing on June 25th. No other game server hosting provides an emulinker option to my knowledge. The staff at UGS originally stated that there will be another company taking over (Clanwarz), but they have since stated that Clanwarz has not made any effort to migrate files and will most likely not be doing so. Regardless, emulinker is almost guaranteed not to be supported, so this doesn't matter too much.
This means that the Chicago Galaxy will close. This is very unfortunate, but there is no way to save the server right now and we will have to recover by logging on to the NY server. The server in New York is being hosted on a Linode which just got a free upgrade to a faster processor and more memory, so there should be absolutely no issues with handling the new load of users.
I'll keep this page updated with more information as I receive it. I'll answer all questions you guys have in this FAQ here. I won't be answering questions about people complaining about lag, ping, or desyncs because this is not the discussion for that.
FAQ:
So is there only going to be one Galaxy now?
As of June 25th, yes. Although I will most likely close it and redirect people to the NY one a few days before. That being said, I am open to new ideas (maybe a West Coast server?) There are issues with this though, as you'll read below.
What about West Wonderland? What's going to happen to the other servers that are hosted with UGS?
Your guess is as good as mine. WWL doesn't get too much traffic so I assume it will close, but I might be wrong. Let me know if anyone learns any information.
Why not just open a new server like you did with the NY one?
The NY server runs on a Linode, which is double the cost of the Chicago server per month (I made a lengthy post in the donation thread breaking down the cost). I originally planned to use it only for development and hosting my own projects, but I decided to put an Emulinker server on it since it does not take up much resources and I don't use it too often. I still haven't decided whether or not I'd be willing to be the primary financial supporter of another server, where the costs and responsibilities add up over time. If we can see a clear benefit from having multiple servers, then we'll take it from there.
If there was another hosting company that is willing to host an emulinker server for $10 a month, then that would work, but I do not think they exist.
What about all the projects that are supposed to make the server better? What happened to writing a new server and working with Mupen64plus and fixing bugs? How come you are rarely on Kaillera these days?
There are many reasons for this. Projects like this are not easy and take effort and time, especially when there are not many people (or just one) invested in them. Even if I had the time to work on these projects, there is a possibility I would not be able to due to a conflict of interest with my current employer. I don't want to abandon them, but I won't be making any progress on them over this summer.
Now that I am in the West Coast, my ping time to Galaxy has increased pretty significantly as well. I also have less time to log on than ever before. I'm also not using any Windows machines personally, so logging on isn't as accessible right now.
What can I do to help?
If anyone would like to start a server (a few people have contacted me, but they have not set anything up yet), let me know. I'd be happy to help set up and configure the server and such. If you or anyone you know knows how to code and wants to contribute to an open source project, there are ample ways to do so. I will say that if you are pursuing computer science or related fields and want to impress employers and colleagues, it's what you want to do, and you'll end up learning more than you will in school.
Let me know what your thoughts are, and any questions you might have.
