Friend Connection Quality Color

doe sthe color indicate the strength of you and your friends connections combined, how far way they are, or how good their connection alone is?

i ask because I have a friend on my friends list who lives in the same city as me(no more than5-8 miles away) and he has a red color, while a friend that's two states away has an ornage... or something. But I know its higher than red.

Strange...
anyone?

i think it is the strength of you and your friends combined. not sure though. but i know it isnt how far you are because my friend lives in the same city and its green.
