I've been quite curious about how often Smash Balls appear and how consistent the intervals are. From the footage it would appear that you can pretty much count on one appearing at some point during a given match, and it's not unusual to see a second before the two-minute mark.
But regarding that one interview where the Nintendo rep explains Smash Balls, to paraphrase his words, "let's hope one appears," he implies that there are matches in which you won't see one. I hope this to be the case because you will have more diversity in your fights, some of course having those King of the Hill moments with a frantic dash for the Smash Ball. But I think having too much of that, let alone in every match might become stale or bring the game out of focus, making it slightly less of a fighting game and slightly more of an objective-based affair. I guess what I'm saying is it might feel like having a Target Test randomly crop up in your battle.
And besides all that Smash Balls should be a big deal and a grand occurence as the game intends it to be. That won't be achieved if you go into the fight wondering when the Smash Ball's going to show up, because you know it will, and trying to situate yourself and gain dominance of the playfield for when it arrives instead of focusing on giving Mario a ruptured carotid artery (here's hoping for Luigi's F-Smash to return!)
I've no doubt in my mind that Smash Ball frequency will be customizable. But I wonder whether to the extent that I would hope to see. That is to say, alongside the low/medium/high options there would be a "who knows?" for those who want a wider spectrum.
