Freaking Sonic

Alright I have a friend who plays as Sonic who uses spin dash and other fast attacks from sonic. Now I found out that I can negate a few things with missle but otherwise I sometimes will loose as Samus because of mid air spin dashes that I nearly dodge.

May I have some help?

I checked the Sonic match-up thread in the Sonic sub-forum one day, and I did not like how they undermined Samus, as if Sonic was a problem for Samus. Here are some key points you should keep in mind.

  • Most of Sonic's attacks lack priority.
  • Sonic doesn't have much attacks that are KO potential.
  • Sonic is light.
  • Don't use your Screw Attack if Sonic uses his Spring and then comes down with a d-air. That will out-prioritize the Screw Attack like Link's d-air.
  • Sonic's Forward+B can be stopped by a Charge Shot, partial or full.
  • Sonic's Forward+B can also be grabbed by the Grappling Beam, whether Samus is standing idly or dashing and using the Grappling Beam.
  • Sonic's Forward+B can be hindered by Bombs. Lay Bombs down when necessary. Sometimes if my opponent is rolling around me, I'll start laying Bombs. This is somewhat of a mindgame, because he or she sees Samus roll into a ball, and they might think that you are rolling.

A lot of the time it's easier to try and stop Sonic's attacks rather than dodge them. Dryn already mentioned Charge shot, grapple beam, and bombs.

Another possibility to consider is well timed melee attacks as they can be surprisingly effective at stopping Sonic's attacks. Jab becomes really useful when fighting Sonic.

If he's spin dashing right at you, he's really, really easy to grab. Getting grabbed by Samus is somewhat humiliating because of how bad her grab is. Screw Attack out-prioritizes all of Sonic's aerials except for dair. Sonic is fast so it might be hard to land a kill move. Try to get Sonic off-stage, then attack him as he uses the spring or homing attack. Utilt, bair, and fsmash work well. If he starts to airdodge, predict it, and attack him as the airdodge finishes.

You can also use a fully charged shot if you find landing a utilt, bair, fsmash, or dtilt a bit too difficult. In some cases I find it easier to hit him with than the above mentioned moves, especially if he likes charging straight at you.
