after playing at the last tourney i went to, i realized that people can do what i call late dash attacks and go through a persons entire shield, this happened especially against fox. what can i do after he has done that? you can't just try to get a lucky behind the back shieldgrab marth gets some times because its too risky and fox is too fast.

if someone can help me with a way to punish this fox plz post. because at the moment all i can think of to do is a wavedash from my shield.

If you're feeling confident, you could Wavedash backwards out of your Shield and go for an uptilt to begin a greater combo at low %. At Higher %, I'd say use the shffl'd Dair to a Fsmash.

Wavedash out of shield the direction the Fox came from and Fsmash backward towards the Fox. It has to be a very quick motion.

yeah JBM i remember seein you have this problem, think you were playin against Dmac or somethin...

anyway, theres not really much you can do about it, its basically because he wanted to dask attack you to pop you up, but once he got too close he figured you would try to shield grab, so then just did it too late. Its not a real problem you have to worry about, as most people will just grab you anyway... though its gonna happen, just something you have to watch for.

Personally, I would tell you to WD out of shield more, perferably backward. But realistically, its just all about watching them, one of those things you cant really plan ahead for =/ hope it helps

Another thing you can do is build fast reflexes and do what I do. Meaning, a lot of times when the oppoent performs a dash attack, I'll shield grab him before the dash attack goes through the length of my shield. Once in a while I'll mess up and grab too late but a lot of times I do it correctly.

I haven't had a lot of confirmation on this, but I have two friends who shield-grab like mother ****ers and I've seen them effectively shield-grab the dash attacker right after the attack hits their shield, even if the attack is still in effect. Although I don't know how close your opponent is before he attacks. Can you shield-grab him when he's right behind you?

sometimes, i'd say probably 1/5 times u'd be able to, so its very unlikely to grab him when he's behind me, its happened to me b4, but this time during the tourney i happened to not get so lucky by not grabbing him.

I don't know IMO at lower percentages I would take a grab over a fsmash or anything else. On FD, it can lead to uthrow chains or uthrow to utilt chains. On platform levels, I would uthrow in hope to get them on a platform to start utilting / shuffling uairs on the fox. I'd rather get an easy 50 percent damage on the space animals then just merely fsmashing them or whatever else you know?

At higher percentages, that could change, maybe an fsmash is the way to go. IMO, I would consider sweetspotting a reverse up b out of shield. I guess it depends on the situation. I don't know this for a fact but I have a feeling wavedashing to tipper takes too much time to pull off before the space animal recovers from the blocked dash attack. I think reverse up b is the way to go to get them off stage for easy edgeguarding.

EDIT: Bottom line, if you can get fox in an edgeguarding position, fsmash or reverse up b or whatever is the way to go. If you can't, go for a grab to combo the space animal for good percentage.

nah you're right, B-Will, the WD Tipper does take too much time, unless they're shield is low enough for it to just hit them anyway, they're not gonna sit there and take it. SirNegroJuice, when fox dash attacks past your shield, you cant shieldgrab him, thats why they do it. Of course you are playing as marth... and sometimes marth just pulls random *** grabs from nowhere, right? ;]

lol but realistically, you dont wanna rely on luck when you're playing in a tournament. The best thing to do is to just back off. The person already read you enough to mess you up with the dash attack, you're going to get yourself in more trouble by just trying to throw something out there. Try to WD out of your shield alot more, and go backwards if you see him coming up to you, no hate against Dmac but his fox aint as good as his ganon a person thats just playing fox as a counter, is normally pretty predictable... mainly aloooot of nairs coming straight at you, dont run into it. The only way fox outranges you, is with his blaster, so abuse it while trying to stay out of their camping.

and Brightside - dont wanna sound rude or anything but your sig is wrong, you're not the only Marth main in the midwest... theres alot of them.

it means In My Opinion

I think the F-smash would be fast enough. The topic creator said the fox is doing it later then normal and Fox's dash attack last pretty long. Like B-Will already said choosing either to F-smash or grab is situational. I think doing a reverse up B would be a bad choice, might have to much lag to follow up with anything at the edge.

lol Echo its just a joke, I know I'm not the ONLY Marth main in the midwest im just trying to point out how little people use him as a main. Also, the only other mid-west marth mains I know are B-ryan and AS$ :p

Which is why I said at high percentages. If they are high enough, you should be able to recover well before they have a chance to firefox back for an easy edgeguard.
lol my bad didn't catch that part I guess. Yeah a RDS would work might even be better then an F-smash in some situations since its faster.

yeah i agree with echo and b-will. thanks i appreciate it.
Im hurt :p no thanks to poor me even though I was the first to bring it up

I may not be the best marth but Ive at least been around a while to realize things about the game.

When fox does that to your sheild, you must accept the fact that you are in no position to attack so instead of trying to capitalize on it, just roll out of your shield and get the hell out of there. Re-establish yourself then prepare to attack.

There are just some points and positions in the game where you just have to get the **** out of there and when fox does that to you, thats one of them.

And besides, if this is happening several times to you in one match, you might want to think about the amount of time you are spending in your shield.

Solution to shielding too much: empty short hops and short hops with fairs. Although against fox I like to stay on the ground more, but mix it up with short hops then get that grab when he's not expecting it.

Husband is being modest, unlike many other smashers on these boards.

i think you can sheild grab while the move is in effect right after it touches your sheild-couple frames sheild lag
