Foreign Man in Genesis Land

“Death by ****” or DBR as they’re more commonly referred to (Perhaps to protect the sensibilities of younger smashers, but more than likely because it’s much easier to do so) have always been an incredible source of inspiration.
Their initial run of combo videos are perhaps the most highly regarded line of combo videos of their time, and maybe for all time. The only line of combo videos non-DBR that comes to mind are the ones produced by masterwumpus back in the day (Though incredibly, he did not produce a Fox combo video, choosing to pick characters that we mostly didn’t see in DBR’s line up).
I can remember all the way back to 2005, I was in my tenth grade of schooling. Along comes a man named Zelgadis, the famous Fox main from DBR and his combo video ‘Shined Blind’ which took the world by storm. Shined Blind is an incredible Fox combo video, probably the best Fox combo of its time. People still regard it as a holy grail of combo video editing, and it was the thing that made me say to myself “I’m gonna get good at this game. I want to be able to play like that”.
This was always their mission statement, a goal that I too try to hold true. Their goal wasn’t merely to glorify themselves, or to simply entertain people with their incredible combo videos. Their goal was to say “This is how awesome super smash bros. Is. You should play it too because it’s just too good”. These were combo videos that you could show to a friend, impress them, and introduce them to competitive smash.
It worked, it did. DBR is very good at this it seems. I have a lot to thank for in this group of Cali smashers, even in a land as far away as Australia. It is no surprise then, that this is the very same group of players who would inspire me to travel all the way to America just to compete in a smash tournament.
It was 12-17-2008, 02:00 PM Australian Eastern Standard time when The King (One of America’s famous Jigglypuff mains and member of DBR), began a thread on www.smashboards.com advertising a tournament they were to hold in the American Summer of 2009 entitled ‘Genesis’.
This, my friends, was an incredible day. By the time I’d gotten to the thread, it had already well over 10 pages of discussion and hype. This was a tournament boasting 3 full days of smash in every flavour. As they put it:
“You've waited a long time for this moment...years, even, way back when Mattdeezie himself last put together a little slice of infamy with Tournament: GO! You've waited years to have a reason, your reason, THE reason to travel to Norcal to experience the best smash that Norcal, Socal, the whole of the West Coast and the entire nation has to offer.”

It’s quite likely you already have in fact, but re-read, realise once again just what it is that you’re going there for, or missing out on. I can hardly fathom the idea of missing a tournament like this, even if I was retired from the scene, sure it would be such an incredible experience, to see everyone again, that I could not think to pass up on it.
For me, I believe it is a once in a lifetime opportunity. For me, I believe this is the last time I will see the people I regarded as heroes during my younger days, together again for one last tournament. I want to see the players that I idolised back in the day playing it out one more time, rivalries anew. I want to see epic clashes, I want to see upsets, and I want to be there to see it with my own eyes, instead of being trapped on the other side of a computer, reading about it all the time.
So then I decided. I was going to Genesis. Making that decision was almost far too easy. I was right too, it wasn’t as easy as making that simple declaration to myself.
I’m 18, and I’ve just started Uni this year. If Genesis was going to be on during my Uni semester, then that would be it. I wouldn’t be able to go. So then I checked my calendar for Uni, lo and behold, I had exactly the days off on holiday that I needed to attend this tournament. I swear to you, ONE weekend later, and I would have to miss this.
The next issue was Money. Did I have enough Money for this? Yes. I have enough money, I’ve been saving up and saving up, and I don’t have any large investments to make at the moment. My parents have been wanting me to save hard because they’re moving overseas, and I’ve worked for a year full time with most of that money earned still completely saved up.
That brings me to the very last obstacle. My parents. Well I’ll spare you the details, but they’re not particularly happy. I mean they are happy that I’m going to be going to America and seeing more of the world. They’re not happy about me spending money. Quite literally that.
I come from a below average family when it comes to financial status. Long story short, the lawyers took everything when my parents were separated (completely my mother’s fault), and my dad is too old to try and start a new business (he’s 67). So this year, the year I start Uni, my dad and stepmum, they decide to cut my board in half, from $150 p/w to $75 p/w, and because I’ve gone and said I want to spend my money in America, they’re not particularly impressed. It’s much more like a slap in the face to my parents whom struggle every day with what little they receive from the government in the form of compensation to look after my younger brothers and me.
But, they’re not so unreasonable that they will stop me. I will go to Genesis this year, at a cost of an extra $25 p/w which will help my family. That is not so bad I suppose. This is the money that they will use to help feed and clothe and keep a roof over my family, and to that end I would offer my parents any percentage of my weekly wage.
So then practically everything is set. I have money, I have parental consent and I have a goal. It is my goal to write about my time in America, about being at Genesis. I will describe in my own words the events that will transpire in and around it, so that it may be forever immortalised as an important milestone in the history of Smash.
