Do people actually READ these things?
Quiet... So very quiet.
I just discovered these things exist. Carry on.
In the meantime, for whatever reason, the first thing that popped into my mind was to rant on something about Brawl. Because, this is a Smash-oriented forum, so it's only natural. And I feel the need to make people argue amongst themselves, or to possibly question their motifs for such things.
I'm seeking the argument of stumping... Perhaps I'm thinking too philosophically for my answers.
Brawl disappointed me so severely, not because of the loss of wavedashing (who cares about THAT anymore, heh heh), not because of no L-canceling (I'm just learning how to use that effectively), not even because of the "major" changes in game physics (while I must admit that does still linger)...
I absolutely hated the roster representation, I hate how much hype it has garnered, and yes... the fanbase does a very poor job of representing, too.
I'll start from the bottom.
The fanbase feels the need to ALWAYS be right. ALWAYS be superior. ALWAYS feel that they are invincible in the face of both of Brawl's older siblings Melee and 64. While it would be utterly foolish to not recognize that Brawl is THE superior Smash game in terms of... well, everything, the fans that try so hard to support it end up doing it more harm than good. Most quarrel on so much as the slightest joke towards the title; since when did people become so pathetic that they are butt-hurt by the simplest of statements?
I'll bet someone just rushed to the comment box just to defend themselves on that note.
The hype. Sakurai, what have you done. This is where my respect for the [gaming] media lost anything close of noteworthy. You swear, they get off to this kind of stuff, giving it "perfect" scores when we all know that nothing in this world is perfect. Was it because of the enduring pressure of so many brainwashed fanboys and fangirls they felt the need to give such high scores? What did they play it, just a day? So... so sorry.
Then, the biggest factor of all. The magnificent and almighty roster.
Yay for Sonic!... and that's... really the only DOJO!! update I nearly shed tears for.
Super Smash Bros. 64 had an excellent start-up. Mario, Samus, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Luigi, Captain Falcon, Ness, Pikachu, Link, Fox, even Jigglypuff (who surprisingly once had a lot of popularity outside Japan).
Super Smash Bros. Melee was even better, adding on to the popular franchises with even more respectable characters. Bowser, Peach, Ganondorf, Falco, Zelda, Sheik (a pleasant surprise), Mewtwo, Mr. Game & Watch (yes, he is rather famous), even Pichu (who was arguably quite popular in the Gold/Silver days, just as history repeats itself and its popular yet again in the HeartGold/SoulSilver days... especially Japan). All this, and bringing back the ENTIRE first roster of the original game.
...And now you can play as Master Hand without cheat codes. Oh, the wonders.
And then,
you have Brawl.
Olimar, Pit, Zero Suit Samus, R.O.B., Lucario, Pokemon Trainer, Meta Knight (believe it or not, Meta Knight was actually scorned [almost as bad as he is now] for being such an unknown character), Diddy Kong. Where's the motivation? Where's the representation? Where are the FEMALES? Most of these characters are either way too retro, washed-up has-beens who should've been at least in MELEE when they were still popular, or thrown in just to represent modernization. Arguably, only Ike, Dedede, Sonic, WIND WAKER Link, Wario, and MAYBE even Wolf and Lucas were the closest to "popular" additions we got. But that's it. That's it! No one really sticks out of the crowd compared to the first two games, other than Sonic, who's so washed up he's actually learning how to swim. (Sorry, Sonic.)
Just... unbelievable. And then characters were cut. Cutting characters? Just what we need in this great franchise. Who's to say we will no longer see Ike, or Lucario, in the next game, despite the fact they're originals and have only appeared once?
Granted. Most of the cuts consisted of the more unpopular clones, and of course the infamous cat who was greatly under-represented... but, HELLO, my good people! Do you all have boxed minds! Have you heard of a little something called BEEFING? Brawl's Bowser would like... no, LOVE... to have a word with you if you haven't.
There.
That's all I wanted.
Venting. Feels pretty good, actually, just to get my thoughts out in a more "private" space on the 'net.
Likely, someone'll probably come by here, and if you made it this far... anti-Melee, anti-Brawl, anti-64, even anti-Smash, I applaud you sincerely.
Now get out of here while I think of something else controversial to type about. Probably about Sakurai... Yeahhhh... Sounds like the perfect point for my next assault...
