If I had to guess, the match was about to start (the "Ready!" icons were above each players name/mii) but right before it switched from the practice stage to the actual match, the opponent got disconnected. So the game started the match normally thinking that there were two players when there was really only one (which of course automatically made Ryu win). I've had this happen several times in 2v2 matches.
