I did a quick search and didn't find anything on this, so I figured I'd post it. I'm sorry if this is old.
So I was practicing my dair spiking with Marth against Metaknight in training mode, and I started experimenting with footstools. It turns out that a footstool will set you up for a down-air spike fairly well, and with the distance gained from the footstool, you'll have enough airtime to outlast the extreme long animation of the dair. It's really as simple as footstool - dair, but when I was trying it by using down-a, it seemed more difficult than just using the c-stick. Also, in some cases the footstool animation lasted longer, making it impossible to get the dair off in time.
Here's a short video of me doing it once against a Metaknight CPU just jumping:

I tested this up to about 100%, and it worked the same each time. I haven't tested it on many characters, but I can't imagine why it wouldn't work on others. Come to think of it, there are a lot of variables I haven't tested (opponent falling of rising), but it's still a handy little trick.
