What complaints are people talking about? Because I played Smash Wii U today and I loved it.

I might not know exactly why, but perhaps it may be due to the fact that the matches are only 2 minutes long in the demo.

At my Best Buy, we got to play 2 rounds each.

Many are complaining about the mechanics of the game, saying it is too similar to brawl and with not enough combos/techs. From the footage I have seen, I disagree.

This, plus you hardly get much of a chance to feel out the game with the laggy Wii U Pro controller and chaotic elements surrounding you.

Nearly all 5 hours of the time alotted was waiting in line. Gotta get there early, especially on Saturday when more people are free to go. I didn't think it was bad though, couldn't really ascertain anything with only 2 minutes, since they cut matches down to one nearing 9:00

Considering that I'll likely be using the Pro Controller for this game anyway, it'll be a chance to adapt.

I'd HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend against it, unless there is a way to wire it directly to the WiiU. The input lag is ferocious and really really distracting from gameplay.

... at some tourney settings... when playing at that high of a level.

Honestly I understand the need for wired controllers when there's a ton and a half of interference and every single frame matters, but in typical day to day play it's that "ferocious" by any stretch of the imagination.

Well, out of the hundreds that showed up to my Best Buy today only 6 disliked the game. And I stood in line for 3 hours and sat watching the game for another 3. Seems like the game was pretty beloved by the masses. Great time.

Also, if the matches were longer than two minutes dozens of players would never have gotten to play. Possibly even a couple hundred. They have to keep things moving.

There was nothing competitive about the matches at Best Buy today. The input literally took almost a full second from the time you press the button until the input went through (maybe exaggerating, but it was at least half a second). Doesn't seem like long, but it felt like I was playing a Brawl match with an awful internet connection.

That is bad casually too. Someone pointed out it could have been the TV too, which is very possible since they had issues with our TVs at our Best Buy. But regardless, your point is not applicable. Input lag is input lag, whether you play casually or competitively.

Hence why it's simply a demo. The final product will likely fix up all the bugs that the demo may have had.

Really? I liked the controller a lot better than the Gamecube controller. I though it felt much better...

I seem to be the only one noticing that while the speed and pacing of this game is improved over Brawl (and I'd call it an improvement over Melee too, since that game's comp scene relies on exploits and knowing frame data), it doesn't have this consistent speed or pacing, it varies completely depending on the character. This is a good thing. The problem with Brawl was that everyone besides Meta Knight felt some what clunky and their attacks had huge delays. This even applied to characters like Sonic, who could RUN fast, but not much else. The problem with Melee is that even slow characters like Ganondorf and Bowser have this twitchy feeling to them, which not only looks jarring aesthetically, but since other characters have this to a much bigger extreme, lots of characters were not very good competitively. That, and you needed to go online and find exploits and learn frame data - getting into Melee is a pain in *** on a competitive level, the game doesn't have a lot of tools to help you either.

Smash 4, however, seems to be solving this problem, by doing it by individual characters. Were you a Brawl player who played defensively, and liked the more floaty physics? Then you might like Villager and Mega Man a lot. Were you a Melee player who played aggressively and enjoyed the swiftness of it? Then you probably will love Little Mac and Greninja. This also applies to how the veterans have been rebalanced, too.

It really feels like this game is trying to encourage a really diverse meta-game, rather than the fast, aggressive meta-game of Melee, or the slow, defensive meta-game of Brawl. And it's the best way it could be.

It should be noted that the 3DS version actually does appear to be more in-line with Brawl speed, but they have already stated that 3DS Smash is more of a "training ground", with modes like Smash Run and what not to unlock customisable parts that can then be imported into the Wii U version, which is the "stadium".

Unfortunately, because this is another thread that will likely lead to flame wars, I'm going to lock this.

I advise to not make threads of this nature, simply because whether it is meant or not, users will eventually begin to flame one another in a focused area. There were other threads made like this that were flat out disasters. Hence why, I will be locking this one.
