Anyone who plays online should seriously consider donating at least a couple bucks to Firo at Apex. He's been holding it down for the ssb64 community for years now, at his own expense.

If we want the smash server to stay around a while we should all consider donating.

Personally I'm gonna throw down at least $5. Possibly more if I place in the money or win most of my money matches.

I appreciate it, thanks Sheer and all the others considering helping me out.

I took on administrating and paying for the server because I didn't want it to die. I have been lucky enough to have a source of income to allow me to pay for the server and there is no danger of it going away any time soon. I'd much rather have the server around than not around and the price is worth it for the fun I get out of it so I'm not being completely selfless here. Just don't feel pressured or believe that if people don't donate the server will be going away, because it won't be. If that ever is the case I'll make it clear.

For the sake of transparency and for the curious, here is the cost breakdown (irrespective of hours spent working on stuff relating to the servers):

I've been paying the $10 monthy cost for the Chicago Galaxy, originally NY Galaxy, since January 2010. It is hosted by Ultimate Game Server and runs on a Windows Server 2003 machine. Combine this with the initial $50 cost and you get a total of $410.

The backup is running on a virtual server hosted by Linode (who I highly recommend for a VPS) which is $20 a month. I've been paying for that for not as long - the cost only comes out to $140. The extra $20 a month charge is mainly the reason I have been accepting donations as I originally planned only to keep one server, but having both seems to work for now.

If anyone is interested in donating and wants to make sure I'm actually paying for this stuff, let me know and I'll provide some more details.

I have had a little bit of help along the way, Surri-Sama donated a while back, and Komotonoto sent me a donation a few days ago, but it has mostly been from me, but I don't mind paying for it. Having people to help take the time and code stuff would actually benefit me and the community more than a monetary donation but not everyone is into that sort of thing.

I'm not sure what to do for donors other than elevated status on Galaxy and a thanks message upon login that I will put soon. If anyone has ideas let me know.

I would love to donate something. I am so grateful for this server. I would also like to ask you how I would be able to set up a server here in Utah? I know nothing about this, but I think that a lowered ping for western players...few as they may be, would be much appreciated. Thank you so much.

Knitephox, I'll send you a PM soon.

Looks like this are going ok in Galaxy land, I haven't been aware of any major problems or downtime now with the two servers.

School is ending for me this week, over the next three weeks before I go out west I hope to at least get that streambot up and running for good (it should have been done a while ago but some weird stuff with bit-endianness in Java between Windows and Linux is causing problems, i.e. it works fine on my own machine but farts when I run it on the server). I have hoped to have a new laptop by now so I can actually do some serious work when I'm away from my monitor (trying to code on an 11-inch 1376x768 laptop has its problems), but the laptop I want doesn't seem to be releasing in the US. Not sure if I'll be able to do any work on the server over the main part of the summer though.

As always, if people would like to help out money-wise, feel free to send me a pm.

Hey firo do you have paypal or anything?

We could set up a donation page for you and then do a little donation drive every once in a while. Encourage everyone who plays online to donate something, even if it's just $1. If like 50 people all donated just a $1-2 to you that would be pretty legit.

I do have a paypal. The email address is firo35 at gmail. Any amount certainly helps (I pay for the server with paypal, so the money would go directly to the server costs).

EDIT: Thank you Battlecow!

I'm saying that the way you play Smash may be seen as "cheap"
