Fawful is fun and silly. He's also a spiteful weirdo who holds a grudge. And he is the best representative available for the Mario RPGs, which currently are only represented by a few scraps and pieces.
When Superstar Saga came out, he was an instant fan favorite character. He's one of the main characters in the two most popular and highest-rated Mario & Luigi games, which both were remade recently. IDK how well the remakes did, especially on a dying system, but the original games were quite popular.
I love his design, which can include the weird jetpack/gun headset plus the cape, or his flamboyant jumpsuit. His personality is feisty and fierce/angry; he is a villain but also a total SHOWMAN. He doesn't realize how goofy he is and how strangely he talks. He embodies the strangeness of the Mario & Luigi games, so unique from typical Mario fare (which is also quite strange tbh lol). I love his swirly glasses and his big dumb grin.
He has lots of attacks and things to base a moveset on, as well as plenty of personality to animate, and a very unique design that would stand out among the other fighters. Also he is a villain, which I always love seeing more of, instead of just more heroes/playable characters.
Fawful's chances of being playable in SSB are so low that he has basically no chance. I don't really care, I've never had any hope for him to get in. I just know how good he'd be in the parallel universe where he DID get in.
I think Rosalina was the last obviously gaping hole in the Mario representation. At this point, any new Mario characters could be one of many. Here are some other options:
Waluigi is cool too but a little boring for my taste. He's probably the Mario character with the best chances of being playable one day, and I'll be happy when he gets in, but not that excited. Distantly I could also see King Boo. Geno is fine, but he has very limited appeal outside of hyper-devoted communities like this one, and also is Square Enix's, and I also think Fawful represents the Mario RPGs better. Professor E Gadd is a card, but he might be better as an assist trophy. Kamek would also be a good assist trophy. IMO Toads are generally best as supplementary background / filler characters. Paper Mario is a great series but I really don't want another Mario. Birdo would be cool but she hasn't been in many Mario games lately and there are also much more pressing characters to add before they ever get to her. She should really be an assist trophy, though.
