Start grinding out some tech skill. Learn wavedash, L cancel, Short Hop, Fast Fall and all of them together in SHFFL. These are all really important for falco. Word of advice, learning this tech skill will not instantly make you a good player but they are fundamentals you absolutely need.

Learn these things before dacus lol. Dacus is not really that useful for falco anyway.

I agree that you should learn those basic strategies first, but I was speaking more specifically about Falco. His DACUS is better than most others, anyway.

Well, it'll kill you at maybe 80%. And you can DACUS in Melee, with some characters anyway.
An uncharged one doesnt even kill puff at 80%, even if puff doesnt DI

Are you sure youre not talking about JC up smash? It is pretty much the melee equivalent of dacus but it's executed differently.

I really thought it was more powerful than that........at least you can follow-up with a Uair. And as for JCUS, yes it is used more often and it's largely more effective than a DACUS in Melee. Just keep in mind both are possible.

Can you link a thread or video with melee dacus? I can't find any atm.

Geez, YouTube doesn't have practically ANYTHING regarding Melee......other than tournament matches. Maybe I could find a match in which DACUS is used.....I might be a while.

I'm sorry. I feel like a real jerk for misleading you. DACUS is Dash Attack Canceled Up Smash, and it's Brawl only. I only wish I could delete my comments. Again, I'm so sorry.

If you want to be a good falco you need learn lots of different techniques, if you're just begginning then I'll suggest you start by learning the basic ones:

-Short hop, fast fall, L-Cancel (most commonly refered as shuffling/shuffle)
-Wavedash (including wavedashing out of your shine)
-Dash dancing
-Short hopped lasers
-Directional Influence (DI, very useful to extend your survivability)
-Teching in ground (and wall when recovering)
-Jump Canceled grabs (JC grabs, you can also JC grab out of shine)

Keep in mind that the timing of shuffled aerial attacks changes when hitting a target, so you may want to practice hitting somebody right away (just use lvl1 cpu or plug another controller if you have one)

Once you've mastered those techniques you can start practicing on some basic pillar combos, wich is jumping out of your shine and then using an aerial (usually a dair) in some cases you may have to wavedash out of your shine (you will almost always have to do it when comboing fox or falco) to keep hitting your opponent.

Watch videos of the pros to get some ideas on how to use all of the techniques, specially when comboing people. You could watch dr. peepee, mango, dashizwiz, westballz, zhu, all of them are very good and highly skilled. Also, watch the difference of falco combo ability and playstyle in different stages. For example, often times in some stages with low ceiling like yoshi story or fountain of dreams, a lot of players may go for a double shine combo once they got their opponent in the top platform via shine/throw.

-Laser approaches
-Jump into shine into waveland on platform
-Waveshine
-SHFFL nair/dair into shine
-Dash Dancing
-JC Grabs
-Multishine (not really, mostly for style points)

How new are you? This video has most of the basic techniques that will get you really far in the game (when you have mastered them). With Falco, add in short-hop laser (short hop, laser, fast fall - there is no landing lag).
The video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vckV2MJgBzo

If you don't know what I am talking about, just watch the video. There's still a bunch more falco-specific stuff that can be learned, but that should get you started.
