Fail?

Why do people like to say 'fail' ?

It (mostly) goes after epic, which in my opinion by itself is fine as in.....

-That trip was pretty epic.
-That movie-ending was epic.

But what does 'epic fail' mean? It sounds horrible and really makes me think that it's you that 'failed'

-WOWOWOWOW, epic phail....
-WOWOWOWOW, you fail at life....

So is it like failing like school? Like you got 49% on a post or something? That doesn't really make much sense and I would like to know why 'you' guys say it OR don't.

I Find it rather annoying and my cousin recites Memes consistently Which is even more annoying.

I don't say "fail" (at least, not the way you're referring to) because I generally find a wittier/more intelligent way of saying "that which you just did was not so stellar" or I don't say anything at all.

However, I think saying "fail" or "epic fail" is a pretty easy concept to understand, so I don't know why you're acting so confused.
