Explosive Flame is an amazing move, but I thought it would be helpful to explain exactly how it functions, since it wasn't immediately clear to me when I was first using it.
Where the explosion goes off is based on whether you flick, or hold in the direction you are going to attack, when pressing B(special).
For maximum range, you want to flick the stick at the same time as B(special).
For close range, hold the stick (even if it's a little more than half a second) then press B(special), the explosion will be almost immediately in front of you, but with just enough room that most opponents who are close enough to grab you, will avoid damage.
If you are dashing, the momentum from the dash will move you a bit closer to the explosion right as it is going off. You can use this to fake out opponents that think you are going for a dash attack, and just pull an Explosive Flame on them before you get into range for a normal attack.
