explain the stage elimination/selection

can anyone please explain to me how the stage selection at tournaments works? i'm so confused about the whole process and i can't even find the rules anywhere, let alone what strategies to be using... or quite literally ANYTHING else about it. in fact... all i know for sure is that one of the buttons marks an "X" over a stage sometimes.

please help!!

Player one chooses a stage to ban from the neutrals (FD, FoD, DL, YS, BF). Player two bans two stages, then player one picks from the remaining ones. Winner of that game bans one stage, then loser picks. Bo5 generally has no bans. The X thing is just 20XX or other hack packs.
