While I agree I don't like the removal of Ice Climbers I highly doubt it's due to it being on the 3ds. If the gamecube could handle the ice climbers then the 3ds could also. Just another weird cut by Sakurai for some unknown reason. Might still be in, we'll know on the 13th. And even then there's still DLC.
4 Ice Climbers caused problems in Melee and also Brawl in some cases and neither of those games had to reduce NPCs to 30fps just to get a stable framerate, I think it's absolutely the case that the 3DS limitations caused Ice Climbers to be cut.

If the 3DS is limited in this sense, I wonder if it will be the same case as in Melee, where if two many caped characters(Marth, Roy) were on Fountain of Dreams, the framerate suffered a lot.

the irony of the last sentence is that's what I am telling the pro-same ppl, if they don't want to buy a wii u or can not afford it then they should be happy with the version they can afford.

sometimes I just don't think ppl understand how life works, if you want the big shiny thing you got to pay for it and if you can not afford the big shiny thing you get the not so big not shiny thing. I want one of those iphone 5 but I don't have the money so geuss what? I got a old ipod 3 and I understand it's perfectly fine for the ppl who payed for the iphone 5 to have all the cool features.
What you are saying is that people should settle for something in a situation where they shouldn't have to. Typically, things that are extravagant eventually become affordable to those of us less wealthy, it's natural progression through hierarchical diffusion--when something that was previously exclusive to specific groups of people, but that isn't the case with video games, as with purchasing a phone you are aquiring luxuries attached to that phone that you don't need; youtube, internet access, camera etc. Though one could argue the need for these things in this era, they are not necessary for communication. At the most I need to talk and send text messages, and the phone I currently posses serves that purpose.

Now with a game, the purpose of the purpose is to gain as much enjoyment out of the game as possible within the confines of the proposition the game makes in terms if it's enjoyability. If the game is offering me fun through having an expansive cast of characters, stages and features, at best I must fully expect that given how games work. But what if there was a more expensive version of each game on each platform and offers more? You would think that with something like this the content offered would be something optional; not completely necessary to enjoy the game as it is (costumes, colors, stage back grounds etc), but if it's something that was promised to me in the "cheaper" version that is a huge part of the game (A character, stage, more moves) wouldn't that spark a sense of betrail to the consumer? Why should someone be able to get more than someone else because they have more disposable income? Their Wii/3DS is the same as mine, it runs the same hardware, why is it that those who can spend more get more? What if the inverse happened and the 3DS version got more, but you just bought a Wii U and can't afford a 3DS after the fact? It's not about which one is costing more in this case, but purely a choice, as it's not expected that everyone lives the same life style and can afford the same things. Granted, I fully understand that game developers don't need to cator to the needs of a player since gaming is generally a leasure activity, but it's appreciated when you can, especially if appealing to both audiences would only come from a few minor adjustments.

Until they specifically say that, I'm going to disagree.

Hi. I'm new to the community, and I hope to have a nice time debating and sharing laughs every now and then.
I'll do my best to tackle the issues on hand: Should the Wii U have more chars than 3DS? Are Wii U users entitled to such a difference? I'll speak from my perspective, having a 2DS and no intention to get a Wii U. But let's start with the Pokemon analogy, in which I believe you're omitting information.

When talking about ames in the same generation, no Pokemon game has exclusive Pokemon. You can catch X on version A, and Y in version B. And you can trade one for the other. Ta-da! Your use of 'exclusive' is incorrect here, as you're proposing that Wii U version has characters that can be played in that version and that version only. Therefore, you used a bad example that has nothing to do with the topic at hand. And I can understand it: you want more characters because you pay more. Okay, but then...

Should the WiiU version have more characters than its portable counterpart?

Yes and no. Most people being hurt about the little differences between 3DS and Wii U versions seem to be thinking in terms of having already paid for the game (which they haven't) without knowing about them (again, it's not the case). I'll tell you a secret: Nobody's forcing you to buy the Wii U version. If you don't think it's worth the price, don't buy it. That's how markets work. I understand my argument can be disputed ("But I don't have a 3DS, so I have no little choice!"). But if you had a Wii U AND a 3DS and were still going to buy the game, there's no point in arguing over this. Still, as I reckon the Ice Climbers had to be at least partially developed (how else would they know they're hard to implement?), they could have gone the full way and included them at least in the Wii U version. This is the only kind of extra PJ's Wii U should have. Let's remember this is Smash 4 we're talking about, there's (on paper at least) no reason for one to be inferior.
Also, there are probably lots of extra modes for the Wii U to be unveiled after the 3DS release.

Are Wii U users entitled to more content?

HAHAHAHAHAH. Again, just because you'll pay more it doesn't mean anything to the content you should get. If you're not being lied to, you're free to choose. Plus, 3DS and variants amount for a higher quantity of sale figures than Wii U's, and by means of inferring we deduce that so will their respective versions of Super Smash Bros. (although the latter will get an important push with this release). Alienating most of your potential buyers is NOT a good strategy.

TL,DR: No point in having more chars in one version than the other (Climbers excluded), I wouldn't mind them getting a couple extra modes though.

That's why I said I'm waiting to see what the WiiU's stage list is.

I was really excited to see the stage list for both games when they announced they'd be focusing on handheld stages for 3DS and console stages for WiiU.

A Metroid Fusion stage! a Mario Land 2 stage! a WarioLand stage! Star Fox Command, Pokemon RBY/GSC/RSE, Pokemon Pinball, Dillon's Rolling Western, Steel Diver, Donkey Kong Land, Mario and Luigi RPGs, my mind was full of possibilities for great locations from handheld games.

Instead we got a load of **** from newer games that isn't iconic at all to me (really don't care about Reset Bomb Forest, N's Castle, Lumiose City, Tortimer's Island or Arena Ferox, these aren't 'iconic' to me, they're just locations that I barely remember fro games I've most recently played), 10 stages from previous games (most of which were already reused in Brawl anyway, there isn't a single 64 stage there) and 3 that they just took wholesale from the WiiU version.

For me, the stage list in the 3DS version is the worst part of the game.

Way too much focus on newer games, regardless of their quality compared to other entries in the franchise. You made a Paper Mario stage and you picked one based on sticker star? seriously?

And 3 autoscrolling mario platformer stages? just boring.
Implying Pokemon Black, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Fire Emblem: Awakening and Animal Crossing New Leaf aren't ridiculously iconic games. One of my gripes with Brawl was that they picked too many stages from older games, the only spotlighted modern games on that game were...Pokemon Pearl and...Twilight Princess, that's pretty much it, but with this iteration, we're getting much more content from newer, more recent games, and that's a good thing.

Call me crazy, but I feel like the problem here is U users feeling entitled to extra benefits, and not the DS users feeling entitled to equality.

I'm getting both, and say the Wii U version has I don't know, Toad as a Wii U exclusive. I come to like Toad, main him and when I'm on the go, I try to play the 3DS version with a friend, and oh look, Toad's not here. Exactly what's wrong with this.

I'm fine with the Wii U getting extra content, assist trophies, items, more stages and modes even, but I think the roster needs to be kept the same. I get why people are upset about the price difference but it's just an fortunate circumstance, and if it's any consolation, I can give good examples of exclusive content from the fact that it is on the Wii U:
  1. Better online. Handhelds just aren't quite as good with this.
  2. You only need one system and one game to play with your friends.
  3. Better graphics and frame rate, the system can handle more.
But I think the ultimate problem here is it seems a lot of people are forgetting something, even though one may be superior and the other will probably sell better, the main point with both versions is that they are just two parts of the same game, one for the house, one for the go. Why else would they include any sort of connectivity? Why else would the Wii U challenges be described as harder than the 3DS's? Sakurai's looking at the best case scenario of players getting both, and if not enjoying roughly the same experience no matter which version they pick up.

P.S. Yeah I don't think it's the 3DS fans who are feeling entitled here...

P.S.S. Remember when Capcom put 5 exclusive characters into Street Fighter x Tekken for the PS3 version and did nothing for the 360 version? That sucked.

I am sorry not trying to be mean but a lot of the smash fans I see are feeling entitled. No one complains when pokemon has 2 games with EXCLUSIVE pokemon or other games that have a wiiu and a 3ds version having different content on the superior system.

The argument that not every one has a wii u is just plain bad and whinny, not everyone has a ps4 or xbox1 so do you think sony or Microsoft can’t have ps4 or xbox1 games? The short answer is no because if you don’t have that console you don’t get the game short and simple. Nintendo has every right to have an exclusive characters on the 20$ higher and more powerful WII U and to be honest was a stupid idea for them to every state that they will share a roster in the first place. Thanks to this all SAME roster a lot of ppl are vouching for were prob going to lose ice climbers, have lost Pokemon trainer and any other unique newcomers that could use the mech plus is the real reasons there no more transformations in the game( don’t bring the quote about sakurai saying it’s for balance or whatever that was just an excuse to not go out and confirm that the 3ds held stuff back).

I believe it very fair that the version I pay 20 more bucks for is needed to unlock the remaining characters, I intevsted in there system and deserve the reward of doing such. So in conclusion to summarize this entire block of words for the ppl that have no patience: If you want more character pay the price like the rest of the wiiu owners, if not deal with the cheaper version with less content.
I don't really care for your argument, but I'd more like to refute the beginning than anything else. I don't know how old you are, but if you're old enough to have been around and playing games when the first Pokémon games came out, then you'd be aware that people did in fact complain that games had version exclusive Pokémon. All the time. The reason people don't complain now is because it clearly isn't accomplishing anything, and the method they use currently has been established as the norm, not to mention that with such a massive array of Pokémon now, missing out on a few doesn't matter when you have access to hundreds of others. It's a really, really bad comparison.

I think the main reason people don't complain as much anymore is because of the Global trading.

They should have never put this game on the 3ds, it was very foolish to do so. I'm not getting the game on the 3ds because i know it will be the nerfed version. I can't even look at the graphics without averting my eyes for a break. How can you even see what is going on in the game, the screen is too small. I'll be waiting for the better version of the game.

Exactly. I don't know why people state "Oh, Smash 3DS is inferior and I'd rather wait for the better version" when they haven't even played or tested the 3DS game yet.

For the record, several people on these boards HAVE either played the Best Buy Wii U demo, the comic-con or PAX demo, or both. Similarly, Gamexplain has had a good amount of hands-on time with both and says that the 3DS version controls more awkwardly/the Wii U version feels a lot better. That seems to be the consensus too. The 3DS version is gonna be really fun for portable smash and all that, but the Wii U just overall controls better.

We also know that the 3DS lowered the framerate on certain parts of the game to keep it running smoothly, and lowered framerates in fighting games can be a noticeable problem for even casual players. Those are only for assist trophies as far as we know, so it won't likely impact competitive play, but it's still an issue.

So, it's not like people don't have some very solid empirical basis for believing that, if both versions are of similar content and are otherwise mostly the same, that the Wii U version will be the better version for what 90% of people play smash for, the multiplayer. It COULD be incorrect because of some unforeseen issues we don't know about yet, but it's not exactly baseless conjecture.

I agree with @ pizzapie7 pizzapie7 complaining about entitlement is stupid.
Just be glad that Sakurai didn't make it 3DS exclusive or that he is even making a new installment, he doesn't have to do this **** lol. People will find anything and everything to nitpick, the game can't be tailor made to everyones likes and wants, just deal with it guys.

Not surprising after people have played with a gamecube controller for several years.

Point is. "Better version" is gonna be a matter of opinion mostly, and a lot of people are gonna tend towards the control scheme they're familiar with regardless of whether it's well-designed or not.

This is getting bad people are complaining about others opinions and it's a mees.
But...
The way I see it 3ds owner should get the same as wii u owners. There both the same game so why should they have different characters.

Exactly. I could just as easily say the DS Version is better because:

-When you play against someone on a consol in a winner stays type game, typically the player must wait for his turn (assuming there is one station to play on). But on the 3DS you can opt to keep playing, even against someone on the other side of the planet.

-Tournaments won't have huge venue fees as equipment will be minimal, except for perhaps having a set up to stream both players playing during the finals.

-You can have a tournament wherever you want! The Park, A Beach--wherever. And after it's over you can go wherever you want. Hell with a stable internet connection you can probably be wandering around and settle somewhere with wifi to play your match.

-For those long road trips/train rides/flights you can have time to practice, or play for fun with the people you are with.

-It's smash on the go.

If you frequently commute like me, then having something like a smash bros game is a god send. With all of these convenience factors, I feel like the 3DS has the potential to be the preferred version. To each their own, though.

...And that's a fine opinion with a logical basis.

The complaint was that people were calling the "Wii U" version the "better" one without any basis. There's obviously a basis to the claims and one that's been reported on and noted in the people that have played demos. Obviously, there's a reason, if you can afford it, to get both versions. Although, if you're concerned about tournaments, it's probably a safe bet to assume the majority of tourneys will be on the console version because of the controls. So, it's not like the Wii U's gonna sell 0 copies.

What Wii U gets over the 3DS: HD, Better controls (subjective though, just depends on how much you like the Gamecube controller), Couch multiplayer, the possibility of more outfits per character, the possibility of more stages.......

.......and you WII U elitists STILL want more exclusive stuff? SMH to the max.

One can argue with plenty of evidence that the series we all know and love is being held back by the 3ds. And of course there are plenty of good arguments against that. It just sucks to hear rumors of cuts to characters because of 3ds limitations n' such. We all want the game to be as good as it can be, and to not compromise on the capabilities of the 3ds.

Dude, I've played Mario Kart 7, every driver kept teleporting, not one shell ever hit my target and it lagged constantly. Street Figher 4 was something of an improvement. Mario Kart 7 aside, I never said anything against 3DS's online, I just said the Wii U version would naturally be better.
The Wii U version you need only one game, it's called having your friends come over and playing off one system. Have we entered a day and age where we've forgotten about the couch?
Read my actual post, not your edited version, I was defending both while pointing out natural perks of a home console, cheaper local multiplayer.

Honestly, I don't think I'd call Pokemon Black, Fire Emblem: Awakening or New Leaf iconic, just popular entries that will be forgotten by the time the next one arrives in the franchise, I'd say Kid Icarus is something that will be remembered for a while on the other hand.

But I don't think they chose a good stage choice for KI, I don't even remember what part of the game that was from, there weren't many memorable locations in the game for me, maybe the space pirate ship or the moon base but that's about all I remember.

Personally, seeing stages from recent games isn't interesting to me at all, especially when there are so many more iconic handheld games than Fire Emblem Awakening, New Leaf and Pokemon Black.

I have to agree.

Stages in Melee like Peach's Castle stuck out to me since Super Mario 64 was one of the greatest games I have ever played. Mute City was awesome because of F-Zero X. Brinstar represented some of the greatest moments in Metroid. Even Dreamland 64 stuck out since it represented the first boss fight in the Kirby series.

Your post almost made me lose it and call you every single insult known to mankind. Just so you know that's how angry your post makes some people get.

The thing is, the Wii U ISN'T the 'superior' version here. The 3DS is. The 3DS is the original Smash 4 release. Sakurai and Iwata decided that the 3DS was the only way to possibly evolve the series even further so they had chosen the 3DS INSTEAD of the Wii U to make a Smash game for it. But then Nintendo came along and was like "WELP, WHERE'S MY MONEY MAKER" and asked Sakurai to develop Smash Bros for the Wii U as well. So there you have it. The 3DS is the original version of Smash so you are not, in any way, entitled to claim that the Wii U is the 'superior' version. If it weren't for some money grabbers at Nintendo, you wouldn't even have Smash Wii U and only Smash 3DS.
it being intended to be the only version means nothing, wii u has more power and can handle more then the 3ds, ice climbers are prob gone bec of the 3ds.

I am not really arguing the fact wii u should have more characters as more as the fact ppl are saying if it had more characters it is unfair. it's not that we deserve more it's that why hold back characters because the 3ds can not handle them just to make the roster the same. Anyway if the wii u has more characters the 3ds will get them by free dlc I am sure.

Exclusive content that isn't new characters? Sure, why not.

Like people have said, people really don't need to feel betrayed that they didn't get the right version.

Well, now we have a different issue. Why should the developers waste time on characters that aren't going to be in both versions?

Not only that, but people will feel betrayed that they didn't get the right version like I said before. Even if the 3ds version does get a different exclusive character to balance things out, it probably wouldn't be as cool as the more "advance" character the wii u gets.

It seems like it would be in the developers best interest to make characters that will be in both versions. Besides, there really aren't that many characters that would be too advance for the 3ds. Who are they again? Ice Climbers and maybe the chrous kids?

Ice climbers would be a character people would want on both versions due to him being in the past games. Chrous kids is a character that we have no idea how he works. He could be made into a character that could work for both versions. Or maybe he isn't interesting enough to Sakurai. We don't know, and we might never know.

So really, that just leaves the ice climbers...Is ice climbers really worth the betrayal people will feel though? I love them, but I'm fine with them being gone. We really don't need more huge fights over which version is superior.
