At the very beginning of the up B is when you fully compress L or R to tech. You may want to have it pressed halfway down before you start the up b so that you don't have that far to go. Marth's Up B is very fast so you can easily tech just by pressing L in it's starting animation. Try not to hold up when your techning though. If you tech jump you will have to up B immediatly so that you don't go too far away from the stage and die. And even though you'll live if you Up B fast enough you'll be left completely vulnerable because you'll be very high in the air without being able to do anything.

It doesn't have to be at the beginning of the upb. As long as you press L or R in the 20 frame gap before getting hit, you should tech. If you wall jump tech by accident, you can do a bair immediately and change your momentum enough that you can still sweet spot the ledge coming back down.

Very nice info, Cactuar. Approximately how long is 20 frames? I believe smash shows 30 fps, so 20 frames is .666 seconds? That seems like a long time. I only occasionally pull off the edge tech, and I know it is considered something very difficult to do. If there is so much time to hit L/R, what makes edge teching so difficult?

Also, does the 20 frame window before getting hit apply to all kinds of teching, like if an opponent throws me at a wall and I tech it, or if I am falling to the ground and I tech to get up?

Yes the 20 frame window applies to all techs. This is why often when you miss your first tech you can't tech again for a bit, since you have to wait a 20 frame time period before you can attempt to tech again.

I appreciate the anwsers but still kinda confused, I'm not one for knowing alot about frames so if Marth is hit as he reaches approximately when do I hit L/R to tech it at what point of the up+b do I hit it to tech?

You can edgetech if you press L or R 20 frames (1/3rd of a second) before you get hit while touching a surface. Marth's up+B is MUCH shorter than 1/3rd of a second if you're trying to sweetspot, so just press L or R pretty much any time during the up+B; it doesn't matter since it's so quick.
