I've been going back and forth on the idea of acquiring tournament-level skill for Smash 4 but if the tournament community abandons this just like they did Smash Brawl (Obviously warranted) then the effort put in would be by far wasted.

So has there been any early word on if this is a worthy successor to melee?

The tournament community didn't necessarily "abandon" Brawl.

It was just so dang slow and floaty that many competitive fans of Melee were turned off by it, and thus, it had a substantially smaller competitive community.

Tired of the comparisons to melee.

In other news, this will be played competitively.

It wasn't that Brawl was floaty and slow, because the original Super Smash Bros. is even more so and looks very dated but nobody cares - it's mostly a combination of Meta Knight dominance and way too many out-of-game rules piled onto the game that made it just way too inaccessible to newer players (LGLs, suicides, air time vs ground time, time out rulings, scrooging, etc.) - most of these rules were made to combat Meta Knight.
And I hope I don't come off like some kind of salty MK hater, I actually love the character and was strongly against banning him for being "too good" (but would have supported a ban due to broken mechanics like the Dimensional Cape Glitch). That's just how I see things, and I would be sad about it but Brawl is still a great game to me and had it's time in the spotlight and now we have Smash 4 which is amazing and make me very happy about everything.

Smash 4 is not here to replace Melee, but it is the game so many people have been waiting for.

Overall, Im not really here to debate about melee vs. brawl vs. smash 4.

I just want to know if tournaments like Evo and the one in Orlando won't drop this game a year after its been out thus making my effort to "get good" be wasted.

In this age, this will have a healthy competitive community. Many people such as myself are working hard to bring this game into the e-sports spotlight and get spectators interested in watching.

Although I'm not truly "in" the tournament community, from what I've seen elsewhere a lot of people agree that while it's not Melee level of viability, it definitely is better than Brawl and N64.

I think the tournament scene for Smash 4 is going to be pretty big, not as big as Melee, but if people want to play Smash 4 competitively they're going to have quite a few options. My only worry for the scene is that due to updates making the gameplay incredibly shallow in terms of techs, since a lot of techs are being removed as they're labeled as glitches, it will be mostly based around cheap tactics and slow gameplay, I sincerely hope this isn't the case as I love Smash 4.
