"EA confirms Dante's Inferno game
Electronic Arts has announced it is working on a videogame adaptation of the epic poem, Dante's Inferno.

The Divine Comedy's first part will be retold by EA Redwood Shores, the studio behind the horror title Dead Space. While the announcement confirmed earlier reports that the game was in development, no further information was offered on the rumoured tie-in movie adaptation.

"The time is right for the world of interactive entertainment to adapt this literary masterpiece, and to re-introduce Dante to an audience that, until now, may have been unfamiliar with the remarkable details of this great work of art," said Jonathan Knight, executive producer for Dante's Inferno.

"It's the perfect opportunity to fuse great gameplay with great story." "

How is this even possible?

This is... weird. It's an awesome epic poem indeed. Best thing I read in English that year. Not too sure how it would adapt to gaming. I think a movie would make more sense, especially since a lot of it is fairly passive observation as Dante makes his way through the circles of Hell. I'm curious to see how they tackle this, and I'm gonna hold off on judgment until we see more.

They'll probably make Dante more like Dante from Devil May Cry.

I can already see religious fundamentalists freaking out about a game with Satan as the final boss (I know this doesn't make any sense if they follow the story correctly but come on... Satan will almost definitely be the final boss).

Yeah, he kind of has to be the boss, going by the book. Plus, if they're really faithful, he'll have
Brutus, Cassius, and Judas
as minion-slaves. That could be fun, and weird.

I had this idea years ago: make a 2-D (or 2.5-D) side-scrolling platformer based on the Divine Comedy, with a play style in the vein of Symphony of the Night.

The story would be simple: You as Dante have to travel and fight your way through Hell, Purgatory and Heaven in order to reach Beatrice and bring her back to life. The game would be divided into three chapters (Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso), and since the poem itself divides each of the three regions into nine circles, those would be your stages, and the stage design would obviously be influenced by the poem (for example, the last stage in hell would be an ice stage, just like in the poem). Every stage would have a boss battle at the end, with the Big Bosses coming at the end of each region (Satan for hell, St. Peter or someone for purgatory, and God for heaven).

I even pitched it to a couple of friends of mine who are going into game design and wanted to get their start with a low-budget PSN or XBLA game, and they loved it. And I swear, not two weeks after I told them about it, after sitting on it for years, Kim ****ing Kardashian, of all people, pulls the rug out from under us. I was so angry I almost exploded.

That said, I would still really like to see a 2-D side-scroller like this, but EA seems determined to make Dante their answer to Kratos instead. I have no doubt that this will be a triple-A title budget-wise, but I'm not holding my breath for a good game. That may just be the bitterness talking, admittedly.
