Dunning–Kruger effect in smash

Essentially the Dunning-Kruger effect is that an unskilled person will overestimate their ability because they don't realize their limitations also, a skilled person will tend to underestimate their ability because they think things that are easy for them are easy for everyone.
This defiantly applies to my smash experience, the unskilled part anyway. I started playing braw super casually, I was awful but thought I was amazing. The more i learned about the game the more i realized how much i didn't know. I have played a lot of smash 4 since it came out and i have a good understanding of the game. I am a million times better than i was when i first started but smash is a very complex game and i know that i still have a long way to go. I feel that just learning that you are bad at the game is the first step to not being bad anymore.

I think this definitely happens in any competitive fighter, including smash.

Though I wouldn't say that you need to realize that you're bad at the game. Let's be honest, if you think you're good at them game, chances are you're decent enough.

It's learning that there are others better than you and learning how and why they are better.

I dunno about others but that has bever applied to me.

Back when I played casually I didn't think I was good by any means, I was just better than the rest of my family.

Now I play and consider myself garbage. And I more or less am compared to the players who regularly go to nationals.

I have met some players worse than I who thought they were legends before we played, though. That can be funny or downright silly. One guy claimed ZeRo asked him personally for his thoughts on fhe tier list (wtf ever).

I heard about this ages ago and I do sometimes pose the question of how good I really must be. When I was a casual, I had no idea how a good Smash player even looked like, let alone how tournaments ran, so I couldn't even measure how good I was. Nowadays... I dunno, on a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 being someone who still has trouble beating Level 3 CPUs with items and 10 being someone to the likes of Zero, Anti and Ally, I'd judge myself a 4, maybe 5? I do have a very broad understanding of how the game works and I do know what I'm doing with my main and my secondary, and I was actually the champion of a local a few months ago, but I dunno how good I'd really be in the grand scheme of things. Honestly, I'd say that I'm not that good, which I guess puts me as a victim of this effect?...

This topic couldn't be any more true. I was once a FG Lucina who thought I mastered her since a majority of players on glory couldn't offer a challenge.i became cocky and then I played on smashladder. I suffered a lot of loses and realize how much work I needed to do to be a viable Lucina. Rigirous journey X_X

I think a lot of people have stories about playing casually at first. I've always been competitive, but not in the way tournament goers have been. It was in Melee that I started ridding of items once my brother let me know of the tournament scene. For a while this went on with Brawl, and here I am now. I don't claim to be the best, but I remind myself that I can work toward becoming the best.

Oh god yes, this is me.

l mean, l DID start out hating items, so bonus points? l was a stereotypical Brawl lke at first, morphing around Marth and ZSS at times. l'd love my smashes or speed and win semi-consistently against my 2 brothers in FFAs. l dunno why, but l hated Smash 4 lke at first (felt too weak? l dunno) and went Palu, ZSS, and Dark Pit for a solid 2 months on FG. l learned about actual combos and abused the hell out of my characters' hoo-hahs. Even to this day, l still feel the urges with these characters. Somewhere along the way, l started to just learn spacing, probably because Marth. l learned there was more to the game than reading the roll back. At some point, l started watching S@X and loved it. Basically, l'm either playing smash or watching it, until about now, because Overwatch.

But yeah, l can agree 100% this effect applies to me. l KNOW l'm not garbage, but there's some days where a Shulk or Ganon just body me and l wonder why l try.
