The Three Favorites
Juan "Hungrybox" DeBiedma and Jason "Mew2King" Zimmerman are hungry for a big win this weekend. They have not teamed as much this year as they did in 2015, and when they have competed together, their results have been subpar in comparison to their dominance last year. Hungrybox and Mew2King have lost both PAX Arena and the EVO 2016 doubles side event, with their only tournament win being CEO 2016. Nevertheless, if they can get their synergy to match that of Team UGS’ and PewFat’s, Hungrybox and Mew2King could have a good shot at winning this weekend.
Counter Logic Gaming’s Zac “SFAT” Cordoni and Kevin “PewPewU” Toy have been hot and cold in doubles this year. At their peak, they can be the best team in the world, delivering brutal punishes and exhibiting brilliant synergy; their wins at GOML 2016 and EVO 2016 are evidence that they can take big tournaments. However, PewFat have also underperformed this year, recently going out at 3rd place at Super Smash Con 2016. The key to success for PewFat this weekend will be a fresh mindset – one the major factors in their impressive GOML 2016 victory.
Additional Threats
DaJuan “Shroomed” McDaniel and Alan “Alan” Moore are one of the most consistent threats in doubles. In addition to finishing at 3rd place at last year’s The Big House 5, they have yet to place lower than 5th at major teams events this year. With the two of them having lots of experience with each other, expect Shroomed and Alan to put in another solid result this weekend.
SoCal duo Joey “Lucky” Aldama and Will “Reno” Hsiao have been very successful together this year. Over the summer, they had impressive performances at CEO 2016 and EVO 2016, netting wins over teams such as Alan/Shroomed and ChuDat/Chillin. Can they take it one step further this weekend?
A very scary team on paper, Mustafa “Ice” and McCain “MacD” LaVelle will be teaming for the first time together at The Big House 6. Both are fantastic players in doubles -- Ice has shown he can be successful with new partners by winning Super Smash Con 2016 with Mew2King, and MacD has been very successful in the past with Fox mains such as Leffen in the past. Expect Ice and MacD to make a deep run this weekend.
“Demi-gods” Justin “Plup” McGrath and Weston “Westballz” Dennis will be partnering up for the first time at a major tournament this weekend. They have the potential to go far -- Plup is an all-around fantastic teams player and Westballz can clean quickly up stocks. Can they synergize in time and live up to their potential?
Frank “Frootloop” Borden and Binyan “Darkatma” Lin often go under the radar when talking about Melee’s top teams, but their results are nothing to scoff at. Placing 5th at Genesis 3 and EVO 2016, they’ve proved themselves as one of the best teams of 2016, and The Big House 6 is shaping out to be another successful tourney for them.
James “Swedish Delight” Liu and Sami “DruggedFox” Muhanna will be playing together for the first time at The Big House 6. Both have shown that they are excellent doubles players, with Swedish Delight having experience in the Sheik/Fox from playing with Slox. If they can synergize in time, Swedish Delight and DruggedFox could shake up the bracket this weekend.
Longtime teammates Daniel “ChuDat” Rodriguez and Kashan “Chillin” Khan are still one of the finest teams in Melee, and they will be looking to prove it at The Big House 6. Recently placing 5th at EVO 2016 beating Frootloop/Darkatma, ChuDat and Chillin could potentially make another a deep run at The Big House 6.
Team Grab N’ Go, consisting of New York’s Ryan “The Moon” Coker-Welch and Hendrick “DJ Nintendo” Pilar, are one of the most active high-level teams in Melee. Though they have been fairly consistent in 2016, Grab N’ Go are still looking for a big breakout performance where they upset a big team. Could this be the weekend it happens?
Additionally, look out for Axe/Taj, S2J/Lovage, Colbol/Dizzkidboogie, Nintendude/Zhu, Silent Wolf/Bladewise, Duck/Prince Abu, Professor Pro/Vanity Angel and many more.
